This building is my favorite for several reasons.  The Blue Mosque represents the apex of the Byzantine monumental architectural style that in many ways makes it a successor of the the Hagia Sophia, a Byzantine church built in 567 CE located across the street from it.  That you can visit both buildings at the same time is incredible.  Both have massive central rotundas ringed with windows in such a way that on a clear, sunny day, the tops of the domes appear to be floating on a ring of light when viewed from below.  While the Hagia Sophia is the original, the Blue Mosque is also one of the greatest masterpieces of Islamic art.  I gravitate toward patterns and symmetry in design, so I love Islamic art.  If there were one building on Earth I would want to visit, other than the Pyramids at Giza, it would be this mosque and its neighboring older sister.
