Exploring with All Senses

What a powerful activity! Teacher P brought some fresh herbs to circle time. As she passed them around, she asked “Would you like to tell me what you’re feeling?” One child said “It smells like the food truck (he was smelling fresh rosemary). Another child said “It feels soft like chicle” (she was holding fresh mint). Lots of conversation about smells, tastes, and feelings that they actually felt, and were “evoked” from a memory of the smell. She then placed the herbs beautifully in glass jars on tables with mortars & pestles, small bowls, scissors (all kinds including adaptive scissors), and white playdough. The children were engaged for over 30 minutes talking, tasting, feeling, smelling and listening to the quiet classical music playing in the background.

Want a fun, easy and cheap activity that helps baby build fine-motor skills? If so, try the Whisk & Sponge Sensory Activity! First, you'll need a silicone whisk and 2-3 soft, rectangular sponges (no brillo or scrub sponges) in various colors. Cut the sponges into smaller rectangles (no smaller than 1"x3") and thread them through the rounded tines. Place the sponge-threaded whisk down on a flat surface and wait for baby to explore it. Baby may grab onto, bite/gnaw, shake or even throw the whisk. Baby might also grab, bite/gnaw, pull/tug on the sponges threaded through the tines. When baby is ready, he/she may even attempt to remove and re-insert the sponges into the whisk! DRDP measures addressed: ATL-REG 4; SED 5; COG 1, 8, 9; PD HLTH 1, 3, 4.

What an interactive activity! The teacher gave the student multiple pom poms of varying colors, with correlating container colors, and tweezers. The teacher gave the student the bowl of pom poms and asked them "What do you notice about these pom poms?" The student might share observations like "They are fuzzy," "There's blue ones, I like the color blue!" "They are so soft!"... From here, the teacher can prompt the student to use the tweezers (after reviewing the safety) to count/classify the pom poms however they would like. The student may play with the poms or start to classify them by color, etc... After 5-1- minutes, the teacher will ask "Can you show me what you did with your poms?" The student can share varying answers of what they did or what they made. The activity can be adapted to students fine motor needs by changing the tool. For example, the tweezers can be exchanged for a spoon. The DRDP measures addressed: COG2, PD-HLTH4, and LLD4.

This is a cheap and easy way to help toddlers learn about colors and sorting while also providing a fun way to work on their fine motor skills. To set up this activity you will need a tray, piece of foam, various colored pipe cleaners, and colored beads. Place the foam on the tray. Cut each of the pipe cleaners to about 6 inches long and poke each of them into the top of the foam so they are sticking straight up. Put the colored beads into the empty space on the tray. Add one bead to each colored pipe cleaner so toddler can see how the beads can be placed on them. Toddler will then be able to explore the activity. Toddler may or may not sort the beads by color onto the pipe cleaners. Even if toddler is not sorting, if he/she will still get valuable practice with their pincer grip while picking up beads and placing them on a pipe cleaner.

Looking for a fun way for your baby to explore colors in an interactive way? Want a beautiful keepsake in the form of your infant's first painting? If so, this infant painting activity is perfect. You will need a canvas or thick cardstock, various colored paints, and cling wrap. First, you will add dots of different colored paint to your canvas or cardstock. These dots should be spread out across the entire surface of the canvas or cardstock. Then, you will completely cover the canvas or cardstock with paint with a piece of cling wrap. Now that the activity is set up, allow your infant to touch, hit, rub, and interact with the covered canvas or cardstock. When your infant is done, the paint will have spread, mixed, and covered the canvas or cardstock creating a one of a kind keepsake.

A simple obstacle course made with whatever tools you may have on hand. Using simple objects like hula hoops and safety cones, you can create a variety of interesting obstacle courses that are sure to engage your students to get into physical activities. Other items that may be used are tiny flags, disks, balance beams, or chairs. The obstacle courses are easy to rearrange so each time it can be different so students can experience something new. If you are more confident in your ability to set up, you may add new dimensions such as height or crawling if the layout allows for it. You can also implement rules such as having to do bunny hops or count each hula hoop as they go through to add to the activity.

Some DRDPs that are addressed:

PD-HLTH 1,2,3,4,5 HSS 2,5 COG 1,8,9,11 ATL-REG 4, SED 2

One student from each team goes at a time. I tell my students 1 person from your team on the playing board at a time. Students must jump into each hoop to move across the board. Their goal is to make it to another teams cone in order to earn one of their tokens to take back to their team’s bucket. As the student is jumping, they can come head to head with another student. These 2 students then play Rock, Paper, Scissors (RPS). The winner of RPS gets to keep jumping The student that loses then steps out of the hoop and runs back to their team. As soon as a student steps out of a hoop (off the playing board) the next person on their team can begin. The same happens if a student makes it to another teams cone; that student steps out of the hoop (which allows their next teammate to begin) they then can get a token and run it back to their team’s bucket.
