We use language daily through conversation, writing and media to communicate with those around us. It is a way to share ideas, share stories and even help us through hard times (like a good book). I love teaching ELA because I saw how books and writing changed my own life and I want to bring that joy to my students.

However, my 11th grade English teacher, Mrs. Winters saw something in me that she fostered and mentored until I knew that was what I wanted to do as my career.

I have always wanted to be a teacher. I absolutely love the look on a student's face when they realize something about a text or "themselves," as they see themselves in a character. They may reach a deeper understanding about a theme and how it relates to their life. These Aha! moments are wonderful. I feel that Reading is the most essential skill for someone to have to navigate through life. Whether reading a book, understanding a movie, reading current event texts, or even someone's body language or attitude, we need this skill to be successful in our interactions with others. This is why I love Reading and teaching in a nutshell.

We live in a society where they are fed so much disinformation, that it is imperative they know how to fact check the world.

I decided to teach because I believe in the power of the young mind. I always loved school and I have always been impressed by the abilities of children. I am a hopeful person and believe children are the driving force to make change in our society. I want to help my students be better than we are and improve our world.
I didn't choose ELA, ELA chose me. Literally. As a former elementary teacher, English was the only opening I could find in secondary.. hehe.. But honestly I do love it. English is the foundation of all the other subjects and I love how much you can do with it.

I teach to positively impact student lives through literacy. I was drawn to ELA because I personally experienced the joy of reading and writing so many meaningful stories, but also saw, in the life of my grandmother (an ESL immigrant) the barriers not being an fluent English speaker built in her life. I want to break those barriers down for my students.
