the case for video art (the art assignment

In this video by The Art Assignment, video art is introduced. It was born as a response to the technology explosion in the 1960s, mainly when Sony launched the Sony Portapack, a portable filming device. This made it possible for artists to explore freely the relationship between video and object, video-video, video-device.

Video art was also called “expanded cinema” because it seemed to be an extension of moving images, but introducing different languages such as theatre, performances, photography, painting, etc, being very disruptive in the way of making videos at the time. This dynamic “challenged the role of the passive spectator", and it was also a way to document performances.

The etymology of the word video is quite interesting. It comes from the Latin verb 'videre' which means "to see". Thus, video art means "to see art". I found it very beautiful and deep.

This is a very introductory video, which was important to have a general idea of what it is about. And there are plenty of references regarding artists who started with this practice, the ones who continued and the ones who are related somehow to it. Some examples: Nam June Paik, Shigeko Kubota, Joan Jonas, Joseph Beuys, Martha Roster, Carolee Schneemann, Allan Kaprow, Eleanor Anton, Vito Acconi, Bruce Nauman, Anthony McCall, Dara Birnbaum, Hélio Oiticica, Ernst Caramelle, Howardena Pindell, Petra Cortright, Isaac Julien, Cory Arcangel, Guy Ben Ner. These are clues to find out a little bit more about video art.

This video is part of one of the series about performance organized and produced by Tate. In this video, the relationship between performance, film, video, and photography is the main discussion, focusing on works exhibited inside the museum. Recording performances were expanded, being "an essential part of how we experience performance art" and not only a tool for documentation. Thus, film screening becomes an event.

I think my ideas for this project right now are a little bit bland and unclear. I feel quite intrigued by seeing the works of Aldo Tambellini and how he explores different mediums. It could be something to think about and maybe develop further. Working with moving images is something that interests me, as the gorgeous films of Len Lye.

I also think that this project asks us to explore what is beyond making only a video and projecting it. Exploring the relationship between physical space (probably, this will be discussed because of the pandemic).

And gather some experimentations (or only the idea of them) already done in the first part of the fad. I can think about: the drawing restraint task (for performance purposes), the outcomes produced in the believing is seeing, the sound and vision's graphic score, and the song (if we decide to work with sound, of course). And even the protest project (regarding the political aspect) depending on what we are willing to explore.

It's almost a tradition at this point. At Ibirapuera lake, every year we have at Christmas a show with water and lights. Water is splashed upwards and the light is reflected at it, making a beautiful show that reunite many families. Aside from the yearly Christmas show, Ibirapuera present some other shows. Things like commemoration of São Paulo's anniversary presenting the city history. It holds up to 72 simultaneous water jets in the lake. The best way to view the show is in a clear night, so we can see better the light hitting the waters. I think the main thing behind this that I find interesting is the reflection of light in a unstable surface like water, making different effects.

once in a lifetime, talking heads (1981)

This Talking Head video clip opened up space for me to reflect on music video clips as a form of video art. In this one, the aesthetic is very characteristic of the 1980s with the abstract images and the glitched David Byrne who makes some weird moves (it is quite a performance, though). He is also imitating and even trying to interact with those people shown in clips of videos.

I like the lyrics. I think it adds a deep layer to the video. Because it is talking about our consumerist society, and how it reflects on our dreams and the realization of them. The results are translated into these verses: “And you may ask yourself / Well, how did I get here?”. Following by the chorus: “Letting the days go by / let the water hold me down / Letting the days go by / Water flowing underground / Into the blue again / After the money's gone / Once in a lifetime / water flowing underground”.

I think the lyrics and the visual make a good combo.

Plato Now, Juan Downey (1973)

Plato now is an interactive performance mixing with electronic sculpture and video by the Chilean artist Juan Downey. It was initially staged at the Everson Museum of Art in Syracuse, NY, 1973 “and restaged for the first time as part of the Tanks opening programme” at Tate Museum, 2012.

“The [1973] event consisted of nine participants (including the artist Bill Viola and the curator David Ross) meditating with their backs to the audience. A row of nine video monitors positioned between the meditators and the audience allowed spectators to view the faces of the performers on closed-circuit television while shadows of the public animated the wall behind.

Those participating in meditation were provided with sensors to monitor the alpha waves generated by their brain activity. When a certain level of neuronal energy was achieved, the sensors triggered the transmission of pre-recorded quotations from Plato’s Dialogues to headphones worn by each performer.”

I like the way the participants are interacting. The ones who are being recorded; and the ones who are seeing the recording, and are projecting their shadows on the wall. These have a sort of “presence without being seeing”. The use of the shadow as a projection is quite clever.

Downey also worked with what he called ‘invisible architecture’, a term he defines as “an attitude of total communication within which ultra-developed minds will be telepathically cellular to an electromagnetic whole”.

Plato Now, and his other works, presents a well-developed concept sustained by many theoretical discussions about the relationship we have with information. I like how complex and well-developed his sketch from this work is; how every detail is thought carefully and arbitrarily. It is intriguing the change of the title from “Plato revisited” to “Plato Now”. The first one coveys more as an idea of a re-enactment of Plato’s Cave; the second conveys that this platonic idea of image and truth never let to be part of our society. It has been intrinsically present for us, a canon.

sources:
https://himexhibition.wordpress.com/portfolio-2/performance-art/v-influences/the-tanks-julian-downey-plato-now/
https://www.tate.org.uk/whats-on/tate-modern/exhibition/juan-downey
https://hyperallergic.com/411469/juan-downey-radiant-nature-los-angeles-contemporary-exhibitions-2017/
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Aa4RIyDatO8&feature=emb_title

mirror piece I, joan jonas (1969)

"Beginning in the late 1960s, Joan Jonas created a groundbreaking series of works that established her as one of the pioneering forces in body art, performance, and video art. Undertaking a sustained examination of the process, politics, and psychology of spectatorship, Jonas adopted numerous strategies for complicating her audience’s relationship to her staged activities. She employed mirrors as props and structuring devices, separated performers and spectators by great physical distances, and eventually incorporated live video feeds that multiplied and fragmented viewers’ perspectives of her actions. Mirror Piece I (1969) featured performers carrying oblong mirrors in slowly choreographed movements before the audience, alternately reflecting their own bodies and the surroundings, and offering the audience a flattened view of itself as an image within the performance. The photograph acquired by the Guggenheim Museum is a rare document of that work, shot by the artist herself. In it a single performer sits in the grass holding a mirror that fragments and replicates her body into an uncanny, almost Surrealist form. In both a literal and pictorial sense, Jonas denies the audience any position of stability from which to apprehend what lies before it." (written by Nat Trotman)

I like how Joan Jonas is able to recreate a relationship between the mirror and the reflection of it: the people. It is quite interesting to see that the performers, who carry the mirrors, are always behind the mirrors. Their identity seems never to be revealed. Their identity seems to be the lack of it. And it is intriguing and, according to the text above, surrealist and uncanny. However, it also seems that the identity of the performer is not the important thing.

Jonas plays with the audience as well. The image of them or everything that surrounds them is reflected creating a sort of interaction. Space also becomes a spectator and a participant.

This video is a re-enactment performed by Joan Jonas herself on the work Mirror Piece I. In the beginning, we see Jonas walk on the stage wearing a dress with some pieces of a mirror attached to it. Then, she opens a long rolled paper and starts reading a beautiful and reflexive text about mirrors. Actually, this is a reinterpretation of TLÖN, UQBAR, ORBIS TERTIUS, a tale by the Argentinian writer Jorge Luis Borges.

Mirror mirror: Joan Jonas on the fairytales that have cast a spell over her 50-year career

In this text, Joan Jonas unravels a little bit more her career, her interests, her influences, and the relationship between her works and readings.

The first two paragraphs talk about her famous Mirror Pieces and the way Jonas relates to the mirror conceptually, unconsciously, and philosophically. I separate some quotes, I found them interesting:

“Mirrors and poetry, as well as myth and fairytales, refract reality in unexpected ways”

“Mirrors can collapse or confuse the distance between performer and audience and disrupt visual frameworks.”

She also tells us the influences she had on Jorge Luis Borges’ texts. And, how his writings became part of the text read at the beginning of Mirror Piece I. “I don’t change the language, but rather I change the context, which opens up the text to different possibilities of meaning. I don’t illustrate; I juxtapose.”

“Untitled (Glass on Body) and Untitled (Glass on Face) are part of the artist’s series “Untitled (Glass on Body Imprints),” created in that pivotal year. For these photographs, Mendieta presses her face and parts of her body onto a square sheet of plexiglass, distorting and transforming the appearance of her physical features and youthful beauty”.

For me, these photographic series are so strong and even shocking. Ana Mendieta always works with the exploration of women bodies confronting the issues present in feminist discussions. I think in these two works, she goes deeper in questioning the beauty patterns, and the photographs are a reflection of it.

https://icamiami.org/collection/ana-mendieta-untitled-glass-on-face-1972/

https://icamiami.org/collection/ana-mendieta-untitled-glass-on-body-1972/

This work is about photograph of people and the ambient interacting. I find it really interesting because if not for the people there, it wouldn't make sense, and in different ambient, it would just be some people. It complements each other, telling us how our environment can complement the idea of each photo or pose. The color of your hair, the texture of your clothes, the shape of your body, these things talk to the wallpaper, the color of the room, the texture of the sofa, etc.

Source: https://www.thisiscolossal.com/2021/02/cristina-coral-photographs/

A big circle with 6 meters height, which is a mirror reflecting the sky. I find mirrors so interesting, and I don't really know why. They distort the image, it gives a different image of what is real. It's bizarre yet intriguing. Changing it's shape, it's texture can give many different effects, like making the image bigger, smaller, disproportional...

Like the name suggests, the Sky Mirror always points up in a ~45º towards the sky. It reflects the environment. It's weird, because it feels like a piece of the sky on the ground.
