Post 1 - Character Trait Profligate

Profligate means recklessly extravagant or wasteful in the use of resources. In Walters case this can be about how he spends his money because he just gives it away without thinking. One example of this happening in the story was when Travis asks Walter for 25 cents and Walter just gives him a dollar instead (Hansberry 47). This showed how reckless he can be when it comes to his money which could become a really big problem for the family because they are about to get a big check from his dad's life insurance policy. But Walter thinks that he should invest and buy this liquor store from his friend(Hansberry 52). Instead of buying a new home for the family he thinks that they should get a liquor store. That seems to be very profligate of him to just buy something that only he wants and something that will only benefit him and not get something that will help everyone.

Post 2 - Character Perspective

He would describe himself as smart and caring. He would describe himself as smart because he thinks buying a business will give him great riches. He would say that he is ambitious because he works hard every day to support his family. But he also would say that because he doesn't ever buy anything for himself but will give everything to everyone else. One time this happened was when Walter gave Travis $1 without really thinking and that caused him to not have enough money to get a taxi so Ruth had to give him the money. This showed that Walter is very caring towards his family but sometimes it could become reckless for him.

Beneatha's relationship with Walter is like every brother-sister bond. They will make fun of each other or mess with each other. But it is all in good fun and they just joke around with each other. In the play, Walter ends up poking fun at Beneatha because of her new hair. Even though he was making fun of her it was just for fun and just jokes.

Post 3 - Conflict Resolution Style

Walter's conflict resolution style is a turtle because so far he will just avoid conflict and problems by keeping them to himself or ignoring them completely. One time he did this in the play was when he was trying to talk to Ruth about the idea of buying this liquor store, but she didn't even listen to him about it (Hansberry 32). Even though he was mad, she just kept it to himself. This shows that he will just try and avoid conflict even if he thinks he is right or if he wants to do something.

This image connects to Walter because when nobody cares to hear him about the idea of owning one of these. This happens when he is trying to talk to Ruth and Beneatha about his idea to buy a liquor store, but they just ignore him and do not listen to him which causes him to yell at them (Hansberry 52). This makes him realize that nobody even cares to listen to him. And makes him have the idea that they are just using him.

I chose this song because it talks about this ambition to have great success and get everything that you want. This relates to Walter because of his urgency and frustration in trying to achieve his goals. Also with his ambition to win to get things done the song also relates to that.

A theme of the play so far is the pursuit of your dreams even through adversity and criticism. The message of the play is that your dignity, family, and respect are more important than money and business success. A quote that supports this is "Seems like god didn't see fit to give the black man nothing but dreams-but He did give us children to make them dreams seem worthwhile." - Mama. This quote shows the struggles of their family emphasizing their hopes for a better future despite their problems. It emphasizes the main message of valuing family and perseverance in the face of adversity.
