“If we only listen to the voices that get heard easily, we may make change that really are for the benefit of the whole education system but don’t do that. The fundamental thing education is supposed to do is to give all children a fairly equitable chance for success. We have to have that voice in our heads all the time, as educators, principals, superintendents, people working in the system, we have to always remember that that equity is why public education is so important.”

This quote in particular resonated with me following the recent review in our Board. Over the past school year a proposition was put forward by the OCDSB to make all kindergarden classroom 50% French Immersion. This obviously led to a lot of debate, dividing parents in the yes and no camp. In the end the proposition was accepted and put in place. I personally wonder if the "harder to hear" voices were truly heard and listened to in this debate. As we saw in the previous Etivity on language impairment, it can be reasoned that some learners may not benefit from having a second or third language introduced in a half day immersion format. I think that new immigrants and those who may not be comfortable navigating the feedback system that the board put in place may not have had as strong of a voice in this debate.

An equitable chance for success

In her video, Annie Kidder refers to the purpose of the public school system being a tool to give all children an equitable chance at education. As I reflect on this, I am again wondering if the new program put in place by my board does this or if it will fail certain children. When we reflect on the the ethical standards of our profession, the video brings to mind the standard of trust because of the aspects of fairness and openness that are essential to the establishment of that trust with our students and their parents. Similarly, when I think of our standards of practice, the points the video makes coincide with our commitment to students and student learning in that we endeavor to treat all students equitably and to be sensitive to factors that can influence each persons learning.
