When we find out that there is a Republican sniper hiding on the roof of a building near O'Connell Bridge. "On a rooftop near O'Connell Bridge, a Republican sniper lay watching." 

The inciting incident - 
When the Republican sniper lights a cigarette which gives away his location. "Placing a cigarette between his lips, he struck a match, and inhaled the smoke hurriedly and put out the light." 

Rising action 1 - 
When the armoured car comes and the old woman starts talking to the man inside of the car. "Just then an armoured car came across the bridge and advanced slowly up the street." "The round the corner of a side street came an old woman....... She began to talk to the man in the turret of the car." 

Rising action 2 - 
Then the Republican sniper gets shot in the arm all of a sudden. " Suddenly from the opposite roof a shot rang out and the sniper dropped his rifle with a curse." 

Rising action 3 - 
The wounded sniper figures out a plan on how to kill the other sniper that had just shot him, he cannot use his gun, so he must use his handgun. "He must kill that enemy and he could not use his rifle. He had only a revolver to do it. Then he thought of a plan." 

The climax - 
After figuring out his plan, the sniper executes his plan and lets his rifle and cap fall off the rooftop and onto the ground. This tricks the other sniper into thinking that he is dead thus revealing his location. From the opposite sniper standing up, the Republican sniper gets his handgun and shoots. "He was now standing before a row of chimney pots, looking across, with his head clearly silhouetted against the western sky.....The Republican smiled and lifted his revolver above the edge of the parapet....Then when the smoke cleared, he peered across and uttered a cry of joy. His enemy had been shot." 

Falling action 1 - 
The opposing sniper drops their gun and falls onto the ground with a thud. " Then the dying man on the roof crumpled up and fell forward." 

Falling action 2 - 
After, the Republican sniper is curious to find out the identity of the sniper he had just killed. 

Ending, Surprise - 
The short story ends with a big surprise, the Republican sniper goes over to the dead sniper which he had just shot and flips him over, and sees that he had just killed his brother. He likes to write on common experiences that multiple people will experience. He wrote The Sniper in 1923.

I think he wrote this short story because in 1923 there was the Irish Civil war. The war impacted many many many people and he wanted to write a story in the perspectives of one of those people so that others can get a sense of what they had to go through. The woman represents casualties because she was just at the wrong place at the wrong time, like many other people who live in places with wars going on. So many people die every year due to the war when they aren't even a soldier.

the street between the 2 snipers - divisions between 2 places
This area between the two snipers represents the division between 2 different countries that are fighting. They two snipers are so close to each other, yet so far away. They are on opposing "teams" but in the same city, they believe in 2 different things and are fighting for 2 different things.

the sniper itself ( like the gun) - privileges
the gun(s) symbolizes the amount of privilege some people have in the world to be able to own something so powerful. Even though the snipers are in the army, they still have the privilege and right to be carrying around a gun, they have the privilege to kill innocent people, and to kill people who disagree with their morals, not everyone in the world can do that.

he is a round character because he does things that are lifelike such as creating his plan to trick the other sniper. He also feels pain, experiences emotions like happiness.

he is a static character because throughout the story his main objective was to always kill people. Starting from the woman and the man in the car in the beginning to the opposing sniper from across the street in the end.
Unique

he is a static character because again like the republican sniper, his main objective throughout the story was to kill the enemy. Even though he died, he died celebrating because he had "killed the other sniper".
