Why have I decided to explore Xbench?

Basic CAT tools, such as OmegaT, Trados and MemoQ, are of great help for translators—they allow for a greater control of formatting and speed up the translation process. However, their functionalities are limited when it comes to quality assurance.

Hence, I have decided to explore Xbench, a QA tool for translation that allows translators and project managers to check the accuracy and consistency of translations.

Thanks to this activity, I have understood the importance of quality assurance tools in translation. I now know that they are a necessary part of ensuring quality and consistency in our job.

While it is already possible to verify the quality of a translation through proofreading, I recognise that in bigger projects, QA tools are a must-have, as they allow for the verification of terminological consistency, as well as checking for linguistic accuracy.

Of course, this activity does not exhaust all the features that QA tools have to offer. Therefore, I aim to keep exploring Xbench, as well as other tools, in order to be able to use them as efficiently as possible. Here are a few ideas for further exploration:

Creating custom RegEx rules to check for specific inconsistencies;

Discovering project templates available on Xbench;

Using plugins and automation.

Moreover, given that Xbench is not fully compatible with OmegaT, as I have noticed in this portfolio, I will come back to it and explore its potential with MemoQ and Trados later on, potentially as part of next year's portfolio.
