         <description><![CDATA[<div>VIP: Video #3 Students deserve the chance to read complex texts, therefore, as leaders we need to guide teachers on ways to scaffold through peer and adult support to offer complex texts to each student.  Teachers may demonstrate concern around working with complex texts or may not attempt without guidance.  This fits into my plan because I want to focus on common strategies around discussion.  Providing guidance on reading complex texts throughout all subject areas ties in with small group discussion goals.- Christine Bennett</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>VIP: Video #3: The message that resonated with me was finding ways to get more complex texts into my students hands.  The reason  I liked this statement is part of my goal with my literacy plan is to get more engaging, content-rich texts to my students .  There are books and text they are comfortable reading, but I want to make my students deeper thinkers.  One way I can do this is to figure out strategies that both myself and classroom teachers can use to get students more involved in reading this more complex knowledge rich books and informational texts.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>VIP: Video #2- So much of the time, we talk and think about student motivation, and while intrinsic motivation is important, Dr. Fisher points out that teachers selecting the right complex text, based on interest level and background knowledge of students, can be a HUGE motivating factor for students being successful while reading that text. He also talks about reading volume, and how we need to build a program where students read a wide range of self-selected texts independently. This relates to my plan because I want to focus on choosing complex texts in the first place, and adding the piece of independent reading would also foster exposure and volume of reading for students.          <description><![CDATA[<div>VIP Video #3:  The greatest obstacle facing literacy directors/school leaders is motivating, encouraging, and supporting teachers to take risks in introducing truly complex texts to their students.  Fisher explains that while teachers are generally comfortable with flooding students with a print-rich environment, they shy away from more/most difficult texts with the realization that students may plateau in that zone.  He encourages administrators to create safe-zones where teachers are encouraged to take risks and push their students to achieve higher levels of rigor as they grapple with advanced, complex texts. -Jennifer Gkourlias</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Video #1 Why Teach Reading a Complex Text.<br><br></div><div>Dr. Fisher mentioned that a close reading or complex text should not be read if the student can do that on their own, without help. At first, I did not agree with this but the more I think about it, yes that does make sense. I am going to assume when he says that he means that students who can read the text fluently on their own also have full comprehension of the text as well. I teach reading AIS so at first my thought was, “NO! They need us to help guide them or they will not get the full understanding.” As I continued to watch the video he describes more in depth as to why close reading is important. When a reading is complex you will need to re-read the text to really gain full understanding and that is where close reading come in.  - Amy Reed<br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Video 3 Advice for Literacy Directors/Leaders:  Let the students try out complex texts.  Even if you are afraid they will not understand, students deserve the opportunity to work with complex texts.  Try it out and see how the kids do!  This fits into my plan because students need to be the ones that are doing the most thinking in the classroom.  When they are given complex texts, and guidance by the teacher, students can gain a lot of analytical strategies as well as grasping important content knowledge. -Katie Staub</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I appreciate everyone's points and being able to weigh your first take with a deeper view.  Providing students with opportunities is critical and that may mean educators need to put themselves in an un-comfortable position to benefit student learning.  Close reading scaffolds also need to be purposefully applied to worthwhile texts as all students at some point in time in their life will deal with documents that are challenging!</div>]]></description>
