During the Ceremony, each baby is given a name and placed into a family. The names are chosen by the nurturers and elders after watching the babies during their first year. A replacement child is a new baby given to a family when their first child dies. For example, when a baby named Caleb died, the family received another baby with the same name. This shows how the community hides emotions like sadness.

2. Assignments and Jonas’ Ceremony

At the Ceremony of twelve, each person gets a job based on what the elders observed about them while they were growing up. Some Assignments mentioned are birthmother, caretaker of the old, and laborer. What surprised me was that no one chooses their job. The elders decide everything. When Jonas is skipped during the announcement, everyone gets confused. Then, the chief elder says he was selected, not assigned, to be the new receiver of memory, which is a very rare role.

3. Qualities to Be a Receiver of Memory

To be a receiver, a person needs intelligence, honesty, courage, wisdom, and the ability to see beyond. These qualities are important because the receiver will get all the memories of the past. In my opinion, this job means carrying the truth of the world and helping the elders make decisions. But it’s also lonely and difficult because no one else shares the same knowledge or feelings.

4. Jonas’ Instructions and His View of the Community

Jonas gets very different instructions. He can lie, he must go to training, and he can’t ask to be released. These rules are very strange in his community. As he trains and starts receiving memories, he learns about emotions, colors, love, and pain, things no one else knows. This changes how he sees the community. He realizes people live without real feelings, and that the place he thought was perfect is actually very cold and controlled.

5. Only One Receiver and Jonas’ First Day

There’s only one receiver because the community doesn’t want people to feel strong emotions or remember the past. The receiver keeps all of that to protect others from pain. On Jonas’ first day, he meets the giver in a cozy room full of books. It feels different from anywhere else in the community. Jonas receives his first memory, a ride on a sled in the snow. He feels happy and amazed, and he starts to understand that life outside the community might be very different.

The Giver represents everything the community wants to avoid: truth, emotions, and memory. He holds the knowledge of what the world used to be, both the beauty and the pain. In many real-world situations, people who speak uncomfortable truths are silenced, ignored, or even punished. Activists, journalists, or leaders who challenge the system are often seen as a threat, not because they are dangerous, but because they make people question what they’ve always accepted.

People would want the Giver to be banished for the same reason societies reject whistleblowers or thinkers: he disrupts the illusion of a perfect world. The community prefers comfort over truth. The Giver forces them to confront difficult emotions and the cost of their so-called “peace.” Just like in our world, when someone brings awareness to injustice or hidden problems, not everyone wants to listen, because once you know the truth, you can’t go back to pretending.
