Zygmunt Bauman is one of the greatest interpreters of our present time, a time which turns into a shapeless mass tending to a constant and relentless change. This is not the modern era, nor the postmodern one, if anything, this period can be well identified as liquid modernity: a concept, able to focus on the transformations that affect human life concerning the general policy determinations of life. Bauman offers no comfortable optimism for the future; in his recent books he has shown a bitter gloominess. (Desirèe IV P)

My mother was a woman of great ambition, inventiveness and imagination, but we were relatively poor and she was confined to the housewife role. My father came back from work in the evening and immediately fell asleep, he was so tired. But I hold him in very high esteem; he was a self-made man. e never went to any schools, but he learnt to read several languages and was an avid reader of wide horizons. Above all, he was amazingly honest.
(Noemi Brunno 4P)

The turning point in Bauman's research nevertheless takes place before these famous works, in 1989, with Modernity and Holocaust. A theme that is obviously enormous for anyone, pachyderm for a Jewish sociologist who, thanks to the family's escape to Russia in 1939, had avoided the direct consequences of the Holocaust. Magisterial bridge that builds the dynamics of modernity between the persecution of the Jews, identifying them as elements of destabilization of order, finance against land. In this sense, Bauman makes extermination repeatable, removes it from isolation, transforming it into the fruit of modern civilization, of its economic and efficient rules, to which thought and action are subordinated. The Holocaust as a part of technology and bureaucracy, for which anti-Semitism was necessary but not sufficient reason. A development of the long history of society, almost a horrible test that revealed the hidden possibilities that are difficult to verify in the ordinary.
(Tuminas Lukas 4P)

The Holocaust triggered the ethical preoccupations of his books of the early to mid-90s: "What is it in our society which makes this sort of thing possible? The real problem is why, under certain circumstances, decent people who are good husbands, neighbourn and so on, participate in atrocities. That's the real heart of the problem. There are not so many psychologically corrupted people in the world to account for all the many atrocities around the world. So that was my problem: people who, under other circumstances, would be exemplary members of society, participate in monstrous things - though it's difficult to say if they become monsters."

Alice Valenti, IVP.
