Resettlement blocks were made for people to live in after the Shek Kip Mei Fire destroyed more than 60,000 victim's squatters. The Shek Kip Mei resettlement blocks were also very crowded but less cramped than the squatters, two families both share a 120 square feet apartment, although the rental cost was only 10 dollars, it was a lot of money back in the days. Residents with higher incomes lived in subdivided buildings which were better in comparison. This brings us back to January, 1958 when the first low cost rental housing estate, North Point was built by Hong Kong Authority. They showed a good design because they offered a famous designer and usually a public housing wouldn't have a balcony or their own bathroom and even a better layout. The living standard is much better than other public housings, it’s like winning the lottery if you get to live here, you get your own bathroom and has community center within the estate, however, the rent is not cheap.

During the Chinese Civil War at the 1950s, many people from China came to Hong Kong and lived in Squatters. They lived very close from each other. The living condition was very bad. There were no hygiene, no electricity and because of how close they live, fire can spread very easily. When the Shek Kip Mei fire happened on the 25th of December in the 1953, about 30,000 people became homeless. They lived on the streets and used sackcloth as covers.

Because of the overpriced housing in the 1950s ,a lot of HK citizens can't pay the price of the buildings, so they started to build squatters that is illegal in the mountains. But because of the Shek Kep Mei Fire in 1953, over 30,000 people's houses are burned down and homeless. So because of that accident, the government start to build some resettlement buildings for them to live.

due to the chinese civil war happening at the time and the land prices that were inflated to a level that a normal person couldn't possible afford, people started building illegal squatters on the street and even on the mountainside but due to the shek kip mei fire over 50000 people were left homeless and started sleeping on the streets so the government devised a plan to build resettlement blocks for the victims involved.
the resettlement building were low rent and space efficient housing blocks but each unit was filled to the brim with people and almost everything was public, needing 30 families to share 2 toilets and 1 water source.
