By: Tomie dePaola
Winner of: CALDECOTT MEDAL
This book is about Strega Nona, who is an older woman who is also a witch. Strega Nona has a helper named Big Anthony who sees Strega Nona stirring and talking to her pasta pot one day. He remembers the magic words she used and does the same thing. The problem is, he doesn't know how to stop the pasta pot. He floods the town and Strega Nona makes him eat all of the pasta.
-As a lesson, I would focus on foreshadowing. For example, the author says that Big Anthony did not see Strega Nona kiss the pasta pot and turn it off, therefore we can conclude he will start the pot and not be able to stop it.

(1) On Beyond Bugs! All About Insects

By: Tish Rabe
Even though this book has the cat from Cat in the Hat (which is fiction), I classified this book as nonfiction because the book only talks about insects and bugs. In this book, there are made up characters that introduce real information. I like this book because it goes through so many bugs and what their use is. For example, when a bee flies by everyone screams and wants it to go away, but bees are actually so important for pollination. This book goes over the body structure, abilities (swim, jump, flash, buzz etc), and eating habits of many bugs.
I would use this book for younger elementary. I would read it and have them write about or draw their favorite insect.

This might be a book that is read as a warm up before social studies.

HOT NEW BOOK (Published 2017)
Being placed in a Kindergarten room has made me realize that younger kids LOVE Pete the Cat books. This book is about Pete and his classmates going about their school day with a substitute teacher. This teacher takes the students to all of their activities, and doesn't make it there on time to all of the classes (art), but is able to solve this problem by letting the students do art in the classroom instead.
As a lesson, I would take the example of the teacher being late to art and solving her problem by letting the students do art in the room and talk to my students about problem and solutions. I would have them talk about a time they had a problem and how they fixed it.

By: David Wiesner
Winner of: CALDECOTT MEDAL
Wordless picture book. Around 8 o’clock, frogs start appearing. Pretty soon they are everywhere. They make it to a house at 11:21 pm. Pretty soon they have linens and are zooming through the skies. They make it into an older woman’s home and while she sleeps they change the channel. At 4:38am they run into a dog and trees. They eventually fall back into their pond. Detectives investigate the next morning. Next Tuesday at 8pm, pigs start flying.

I thought this was a great book, I personally am not use to wordless books, but the pictures in this one were very vivid and definitely told the story. I feel like children would like this book because they would think it was silly. I can see them laughing at the scenes where the frog sneaks into the old lady’s home while she’s sleeping. As a response to the book I would have my students write words for the book. Another assignment would be having the students draw on the ending and write a story/draw pictures for the flying pigs.

(4) The Giving Tree

By: Shel Silverstein
The Giving Tree is about a boy and a tree. In the beginning, when the boy is young, he loves the tree. He swings from her branches and has fun playing all day…and the tree loves him. However, as he gets older, he doesn’t have time to play and he wants money. The tree, because she loves him so much, tells the boy to take her apples and sell them for money. The boy does and is happy. The tree is happy because the boy is happy. Time goes by and the boy comes back and says he needs a house – he wants a family. The tree lets him take her branches and build a house. The tree is still happy though, because the boy is happy. Years go by and the boy is an old man now. He says he wants a boat that will take him far away. The tree tells him to take her trunk. He does and they are both happy. Finally, the old man comes back. The tree has nothing to give him, she is just a stump. The old man says he does not need anything, he’s just tired. The tree readies herself and gives him the only thing she has left, a stump to sit on. The tree is happy she can still help the boy/old man after all this time.

The Giving Tree is a great book for children because it teaches a great lesson about giving and receiving and it teaches about being selfless. The tree gives leaves (p.10), apples (p. 31), branches (p. 36), trunk (p.42), and her stump (p. 49). She is the epitome of selfless because she literally gives all of herself so the boy will be happy. We can even have a lesson on the boy. The boy loved the tree when he was little and could play and swing from her branches and have a good time, but pretty soon all he wanted was material goods. This corrupted the tree and the boy’s relationship and he took what he wanted from their friendship. The boy’s part in the story is a great lesson being selfish. As a reader response I would have my students compare and contrast a time they were selfish and selfless. I could also have them discuss a time that they felt like someone was treating them like the boy treated the tree. I believe that the story flowed perfectly and had the perfect ending that brought the boy and the tree together. Overall, great story and lesson.

These girls are in a private school and sleep in the dorms. The smallest of these girls is Madeline. She is not afraid of things the other girls are afraid of, like mice and tigers. One night, Miss Clavel had a bad feeling. Madeline was crying in bed, the doctor said it was her appendix. The doctor does surgery and Madeline received many get well gifts. The girls from the school visit with flowers and they see her scar. The other girls go back to the school and go to bed. Miss Clavel has a bad feeling again. She walks into the girls’ room and they’re all crying! They wanted their appendix out too!

I think this is a great book with awesome illustrations. I loved the rhymes on each page. And feel like the story flowed very well. It was an easy read and did not have a lot of words on each page. I feel like the author told the story of Madeline with words and described Paris with pictures. For an assignment for students I would have them pick their favorite city and write about it but also draw pictures. For another reading response I would have them compare and contrast their school to Madeline’s.

The school bus turns into an alligator and the class gets into the Haven. The class also turns into reptiles and learns that reptiles cannot regulate their temperature and can only cool down and heat up when they are by a heat source (like a heat lamp) or cold water. They do find Liz, she was at the Haven getting her habitat fixed, Ms. Frizzle just wanted the class to find her on their own.
This book is very imaginative and I believe kids of all ages would like it and can learn something from it.

One of her stockings fall and Hedgie, being curious, pokes his nose in it and it sticks to his head. He is confronted by many animals (hen, gander, cat, dog, pig, and pony) about why he has a hat on and he defends himself to each animal. He tells them that he will stay warm and that the hat is beautiful. Secretly, he is pretty embarrassed about getting the hat stuck on his head. The girl (Lisa) finds Hedgie and pulls her stocking off of his head. Hedgie goes back to his den and Lisa goes back to her clothes. When she gets back, all the animals that made fun of Hedgie have taken her woolens and are using them as hats! Hedgie gets the last laugh because they all made fun of him, but he convinced them that what they once thought was silly, was cool.

I think this book is great for elementary kids because it takes an insecurity and totally flips it. Everyone laughed and made fun of Hedgie, but in the end, they wanted in on the new hat he had! He totally convinced them that what they thought was different and silly was cool (even though he himself didn’t believe it). With all the social pressure that goes on in school I think that is a great lesson. I loved the pictures in this book and all of the animals, great book to read at the beginning of winter. If I were to have my readers respond to this book I would have them discuss a time when they did/wore/ate something that other kids thought was “funny” or “different” and what kind of reaction did they have to that. If they are kids that cannot write I would print out blank pictures of winter hats and give them crayons to design their own hat.

However, a forest starts growing in Max’s room! He soon sets sail on a very long journey and reaches the wild things.Max is not afraid of them and he tames their wild ways…he become the king of the wild things! The “rumpus” soon starts and we see the group dancing, and playing. However, Max soon becomes lonely and wants the love of his family. He smells something tasty and tells the wild things he’s leaving. They don’t want him to leave but he does. Max makes it back to his bedroom and his dinner is waiting for him on the nightstand – still warm.

I enjoyed this story. It flows nicely and has many illustrations, which is great for elementary school. I believe it connects to children because every child talks back to their parents and is “disciplined” in some way, just like Max was. Every child also has imagination can create (seemingly) crazy stories and tales. If I were to have students respond to this text I would have them pretend they were Max and talk about their time in the Forest. I could also draw on the part where Max, “…was lonely and wanted to be where someone loved him best of all” and have students write about a time they felt lonely and isolated and why and how they fixed their situation.

By: Leo Lionni
The book starts out by naming different animals and the color of each animal. We get to chameleons and find out that chameleons are always changing color to match their surroundings. Our main character is upset that he cannot be a set color and decides to remain on a leaf forever. Unfortunately for him, leaves change color with the seasons and so did he. When spring comes he meets another chameleon and this older, wiser chameleon says they will never have their own color, but they can stick together and change colors together – they will always be the same. These two chameleons stayed together and changed to all kinds of colors and lived happily ever after.

Great book! It is pretty short, there is not much written on each page, but it flows nice and smooth and it teaches many great lessons. One is to be happy as you are. The older Chameleon realized that they cannot change who they are, they have to accept that they will never have their own color, and that is totally ok. A second lesson is that you are stronger together. When the two chameleons teamed up they gained confidence and were happy to change colors together. These are great lessons for elementary school students in the face of peer pressure. As an assignment I would have my students talk about what makes them feel vulnerable and how they can work through that. If students are old enough to write I could also have them write about how their best friend makes them a better person.

By: P. Craig Russel
Story by: Oscar Wilde
This graphic novel is about a statue of a gold prince. The statue was made in honor of a real prince who had died. The real prince was beautiful and loved by all. He never left his castle and knew nothing of the poor. We are also introduced to a swallow bird. The bird uses the statue as shelter but feels drips of what he thinks is rain. After investigating he realizes the statues is crying or the poor. The statue tells the bird to give his ruby, sapphire eyes, and gold plated body to the poor. The bird does all the while knowing he will die because the winter is coming and he was supposed to be in a warmer climate. The bird eventually does die and and statues heart breaks. The townspeople tear down and burn the statue because it is not beautiful anymore. The statue is burned but the heart does not burn. The heart is thrown out in the same pile the dead bird is thrown in. From above we hear God tell and angel to get him the two most precious things in the city. The angel takes the bird and the heart. The angel is told he has chosen rightly and the bird will forever sing in the garden and the little prince will forever praise God together.
This book is based off a fairy tale but I believe both boys and girls would enjoy it. In a lesson, I would draw on the sacrifices of the bird and have the students look at the change in character of the prince.
