My initial idea for a community health issue is increasing contraception use among older adolescents/emerging adults to reduce incidence of STIs.

This may require some refining, but my current community of interest includes the universities and community colleges located in Harris County, including satellite campuses or instructional sites that may fall outside the county line. I would specifically focus on those aged 18-24 at these institutions.

Preliminary ideas would be to offer training on the current and newly emerging contraception methods to health and non-health professionals at institutions within the geographic community of interest, provide safer sex education and STI testing and counseling at events popular with the priority population, provide free or discounted contraception at outreach events on college campuses.

Community partners I'd like to collaborate with include the city and county health departments, nonprofits such as Bee Busy, AIDS Healthcare Foundation (AHF), Legacy Health, and university-supported prevention and intervention programs such as UTHealth's Own Every Piece.

Tonantzin Juarez

Expanding Preexposure prophylaxis (PrEP) access and use among Mexican-American Women residing in the Lower Rio Grande Valley (LRGV).

Mexican-American women residing in the Lower Rio Grande Valley and served by FQHCs. The low PrEP use rate among Hispanic women, coupled with the lack of data on the use among Hispanic women living in the LRGV, underscore the urgent need for targeted interventions that improve PrEP access and knowledge and remove socio-cultural barriers. Previous intervention studies have focused on gay, bisexual, and other men who have sex with men (MSM) groups, even in some cases Hispanics, yet not Hispanic women[i]. There is limited research focused on behavioral interventions that promote PrEP uptake among Hispanic cisgender women in the U.S.

Various organizations can serve as partners, but the biggest partners will be FQHCs in the LRGV, Valley Aids, and the various county health departments.

I am still reviewing the details of what the program will cover. I am debating whether I want to evaluate an intervention or a needs assessment to identify strategies to implement a health education campaign, etc.

If I do a needs assessment, I will consider identifying the knowledge, attitudes, and behaviors related to PrEP among Mexican-American women in the LRGV. Some items the needs assessment will address are awareness of PrEP, perceived risk of HIV, access to healthcare, potential barriers to using PrEP, and the level of support needed to facilitate its uptake, particularly among high-risk individuals like those with multiple sexual partners or engaging in high-risk sexual behaviors. Assessing language preference too, and other cultural/social constructs relevant that can impact PrEP use, reception etc.,

What are the best ways to reach this population? Including communication channels. What do we need to know that can help us design the intervention.
