I didn't really think much of this growing up until I got older. There were things I was not allowed to do or that I had to do and to my friends, who were other ethnicities, this was very strange. For example, I wasn't allowed to go speak English to my parents (they wanted me to be fluent in Spanish and English) and by the age of 8 I learned how to do my own laundry and I would help clean. My mother grew up Catholic, my father Christian, and my oldest brother became Jehovah's Witness. I really only liked foods I knew I would like. I was that annoying customer that would ask for several substitutions at a restaurant. Recently, I have tried to broaden my food choices and try foods outside of my comfort/cultural zone.
