In 1808 Napoleon sent an invasion force through Spain in an effort to make Portugal accept the Continental System. When the spanish protested the action Napoleon then removed the king, and put his own brother Joseph on the throne. This outraged the Spanish who were mostly Catholic, and made them worry that Napoleon would go after the church next. This caused the bands of Spanish peasants, known as guerillas, to start ambushing the French armies. Since they relied mostly on stealth Napoleon couldn't fight in open battle, and soon the British started aiding the Spanish. Napoleon ended up losing 30,000 men in what is known as the Peninsular War. This in turn weakened the French empire, and sparked other conquered people to fight the French using nationalism as there weapon.

In June 1812 after the Russian Czar, Alexander l refused to stop selling grain to Britain; Napoleon decided to Russia with an army of more than 420,000 men. In response the Russians retreated, but not without the practice of a scorched-earth policy, or leaving the enemy with nothing to eat on their land. Eventually on September 7, 1812 the two sides fought in what known as the Battle of Borodino. After hours of fighting the Russians retreated laying waste to the city of Moscow before Napoleon got there. After all this in October Napoleon decided the return back to France. Only for him and his army to be met by the winter cold and the mercilessly attacks from the Russians. When Napoleon finally arrives home in December his Grand army has been devastated with only 10,000 soldiers remaining. More than half of his army was gone

After the invasion of Russia the French empire was left weakened. Seeing this Napoleon's enemies took advantage of it. Soon Britain, Russia, Prussia, and Sweden formed an alliance to fight France, and Austria joined the fight; declaring war on France despite their alliance. Napoleon manages to raise an army in a few months, but due to the soldiers being ill-prepared when they meet the European powers outside of Liepzig on October 1813 they were easily defeated. By January of 1814 the European powers were pushing towards Paris with ease, and in two months they would already be there. Napoleon's generals refuse to fight anymore even though he still wanted to continue. Eventually on April 1814 Napoleon accepted these terms and was exiled to Elba where the allies expected no more trouble from him.
