He commanded forces in the Southwest United States and Mexico on different missions, including disbanding Pancho Villa's forces.

His greatest assignment was as commander of the American Expeditionary Forces (AEF) shortly after the United States declared war on Germany and the start of World War I.

His leadership style has many high points that can be used in today's business world. He had a great eye for talent and put people in places for the team to succeed. He didn't let friendships affect his decisions and he knew when to get out of the way and let his leaders command. He took constructive criticism and improved because of it. These are all traits of great leaders today.
