The beginning

The French society was divided into three general estates. The first estate, the highest level, consisted of clergy and the church, making up 1% of the population and owning 10% of the land. The second estate was composed of nobles who were responsible for government, army, and court jobs. The third estate, the lowest level, included commoners, knights, and the rest of the population. Despite being the largest estate, they were often outvoted by the upper estates and had to pay all the taxes. The third estate was limited to land they could live on and had to pay taxes that would only benefit the king rather than the public. The national assembly provided a platform for the estates to present their issues to the king. Feeling disregarded, the third estate desired to meet as a single body with representation based on population. However, the upper estates opposed this as they feared being outvoted due to their smaller population. When the third estate was denied access to the national assembly, they gathered in a tennis court and made an oath to not disband until a constitution was established for the free people of France.

The Middle

In July 1789, the storming of the Bastille occurred because people felt that their rights were being attacked and feared that the national assembly would be dissolved. This event resulted in the freeing of political prisoners and the arming of commoners. Later, in October 1789, women marched to the Palace of Versailles due to their anger over bread prices and their belief that the queen was hoarding all the wheat. To satisfy the citizens, King Louis XVI began a legislative government that shared the king's power with the people. However, this arrangement didn't last long under King Louis XVI's weak leadership, and the people became upset again. The first republic was led by Robespierre and was a major factor in the beginning of the Reign of Terror. Robespierre believed that a republic form of government could bring the change the third estate wanted. During this time, Robespierre ordered the execution of about 70,000 people using the guillotine. He made no exceptions for those who were against the revolution. He held his power like a dictator, but the military eventually overpowered and killed him, marking the end of the Reign of Terror.

When Napoleon was sixteen he overthrew the Directory government a staged coup d'état. The directory government was the upper and lower houses. The lower houses were in charge of proposing legislation for the government. The upper house's job was to approve or vote for the legislation the lower house proposed. After that Napoleon went on to continue gaining popularity through his many accomplishments and military feats. For one he made some political changes such as creating the Napoleonic code which gave all male citizens equal rights under the law and restarted slavery across all French territories. He would also eliminate the estate system, allow freedom of religion, increase reforms in education, improve relations with the pope, and restore a centralized government to France. At this point the people are very happy with what he's doing, even accepting him as emperor of France. In 1812 things began to change as Napoleon started to want more power and invaded Russia during winter time and failed. European powers used this as an advantage and built a coalition to defeat Napoleon. He is exiled two times before he dies in the second attempt in a prison on the island of St. Helena. After Napoleon died a new sense of nationalism rose in France. he became greatly known for the domination of continental Europe and for making his blood relatives ruler of places he conquered.
