This exemplar is one helpful way to ensure that students are interacting with their text (in-hand or digital) during independent reading times at the 'within' (literal), 'beyond' (making meaning), and 'about' (evaluative) levels. Copy it or make a similar version that is more appropriate to your students, and have it reside within your students' interactive reader's journals (or whatever system you have in your learning community).
