소학교(小學校) 때 책상(冊床)을 같이 했든 아이들의 이름과, 패(佩), 경(鏡), 옥(玉) 이런 이국(異國) 소녀(少女)들의 이름과, 벌써 아기 어머니 된 계집애들의 이름과 가난한 이웃 사람들의 이름과, 비둘기, 강아지, 토끼, 노새, 노루, “프랑시스 · 잠” “라이너 · 마리아 · 릴케” 이런 시인(詩人)들의 이름을 불러봅니다.
이네들은 너무나 멀리 있읍니다.
별이 아슬이 멀듯이,
어머님,
그리고 당신은 멀리 북간도(北間島)에 게십니다.
나는 무엇인지 그리워
이 많은 별빛이 나린 언덕 우에
내 이름자를 써 보고,
흙으로 덮어 버리었읍니다.
딴은 밤을 새워 우는 벌레는
부끄러운 이름을 슬퍼하는 까닭입니다.
그러나 겨울이 지나고 나의 별에도 봄이 오면

무덤우에 파란 잔디가 피어나듯이

Autumn fills the air.

And ready I wait without worry

to count all the stars she bears

Now the reason I cannot tally

all the stars impressed on my heart, is

‘cause the morning soon comes,

my youth’s not quite done, and

another night still lays in store

One star for memories, and

One star for loving

One star for melancholy, and

Another for longing

One star for poetry, and

Another for ma, mother,

Mother, I will try to name all the stars after beautiful words: The names of school friends I sat with, foreign girls like Pae, Kyeong and Oak; girls who have now become mothers and other poor neighboring folk; the pigeons, the puppies, the hares, mules and deer, the names of such poets as Jammes and Rilke.

Yet all of these people so far away now.

And mother, the star,

is in Northern Jiandao

Pining for something

I scribble my name

into a star spattered hill.

Then bury it (again.)

As for the insect who wails through the night

on account of the pain of its name full of shame

But winter will pass bringing spring to my star.

As the tuft grows round gravestones

the grass will abound

where my name has been buried in that star spattered mound.

They're too far away.
As far as the stars go,
Mother,
and you post far north gando.
I miss what it is
so much starry hills
I tried to write my name,
and covered it with dirt.
The other worm that cries all night
is saddened by its shameful name.
But when winter passes and spring comes to my star
just as the grass blooms in the grave rain

A Night for Counting Stars

Autumn is full of the sky,

as the season passes.

It seems that I can count all the stars in sky,

in autumn, without any worries.

Why I can't count all the faint stars in my heart,

Because morning comes easily,

Because tomorrow night is only left,

It is because my youth is not yet over, truly.

Memory for one star,

Love for another star,

Loneliness for another star,

Longing for another star,

Poetry for another star,

My mother, mother for another star.

Mother, I call a beautiful name for each star.

The names of my friends,

who I shared the same desks,

when I was in elementary school;

I call.

Such as Pae, Gyeong, and Ok; the names

of foreign girls,

The names of girls

who are already mothers,

The names of poor neighbors,

The names of pigeons, dogs, rabbits,

roe deer, and mules,

Francis Jammes, Rainer Maria Rilke; the names

of these poets.

As the stars are far away,

they are too far away.

Mother, you are far away,

in Northern Gando away.

So I, something, missed,

I wrote my name on the hill

where many starlights fell,

and covered my name with dirt.

All night long,

the grass bugs sing.

It's probably because

they are ashamed of their names.

But when spring comes to my star,

after winter passes,

on the hills where a letter

of my name were buried in lands.

Like green grass bloom on the grave,

they will grow lush like pride.

1942년 일본 도쿄 릿쿄대학 영문과를 다니다 흉흉해진 도쿄의 분위기로 인해 교토 도시샤대학 영문과로 편입하였다.윤동주와 중학동기였던 연세대 김형석 명예교수에 따르면 도쿄의 대학 재학생은 학도병에 참가했어야 했었고 그 결과 윤동주는 도시샤대학으로 전학해야했다고 한다. 실제 김형석 교수도 윤동주와 같이 교토로 옮겨서 공부를 했었어야 했다.
