As the Marketing and Consumer Manager for the Gold Coast Titans, my role is all about connecting with fans, boosting sponsorship value, and strengthening our brand within the community. In professional sports, marketing strategies need to match what fans expect while also keeping up with new trends in digital engagement (Wakefield, 2022). Since the Titans are big on community-focused initiatives, it's crucial for me to build strong relationships with our stakeholders and members. Clear communication and creative promotions will be key to helping us achieve the Titans' 2030 roadmap goals.

Getting involved with the community plays a huge role in a sports team's success. It’s not just about winning games it’s what keeps fans loyal, builds a strong brand, and ensures financial stability over time. The Gold Coast Titans are a great example of this. Their impressive membership growth shows just how important it is to have a solid community engagement plan (Doyle et al., 2023). For teams like the Titans, connecting with locals and creating programs that reflect community values is key. By doing this, they’re not just gaining fans they’re building lasting relationships that help secure their future.

The Rise of Women’s Sports in Rugby League

Women’s sports have come a long way and are making a big impact on rugby league. The Gold Coast Titans are stepping up by expanding their female Academy program, giving young female athletes more opportunities to succeed in the sport. This move is part of a bigger push for gender inclusivity. Investing in women’s sports isn’t just about fairness it also opens the door to new sponsorships and fan engagement. In fact, sponsorship deals for women’s sports are growing faster than those in men’s leagues. By supporting women’s sports, teams can strengthen their brand and build a loyal fan base for the future.

The Challenge – Increasing Community Participation

The Queensland Rugby League (QRL) recently reported a 5.18% increase in player registrations (Gold Coast Titans Case Study, 2025), which is great news for the Titans. Now, the challenge is turning those casual participants into dedicated fans and loyal club members. To make this happen, the Titans need to strike a balance between grassroots development and elite performance pathways to keep people engaged long-term (Shilbury et al., 2021). Building strong community partnerships will play a huge role in helping the Titans achieve their goals.

Digital marketing has completely changed the game for sports teams when it comes to connecting with fans. These days, platforms like social media, online streaming, and personalized content are must-haves for keeping fans engaged (Abeza et al., 2021). For the Gold Coast Titans, tapping into these digital tools is key to reaching younger audiences and creating exciting, interactive experiences. The tricky part is finding the right balance — driving commercial success while still building meaningful connections with the community. It’s all about making sure their digital campaigns feel authentic and align with what fans actually care about.

The Titans must identify key stakeholder including local businesses, schools, government agencies, and sponsors to enhance their community engagement initiatives (Freeman & Reed, 2022). Strong partnerships can provide financial stability, greater community reach, and long-term sustainability. Research suggests that sports teams with well-managed partnerships experience stronger community trust and long-term brand loyalty. The Titans’ consulting group must map out potential stakeholders and develop an inclusive engagement framework.

Sponsorship deals bring in big money for pro sports teams, and more brands are now focusing on community-driven partnerships (Pons et al., 2023). To attract the right sponsors, the Titans need to make sure their community efforts align with brands that want to support grassroots programs and sustainable projects. Recent studies show that corporate social responsibility (CSR) is playing a bigger role in sponsorship deals, with companies preferring teams that make a real social impact.

Getting involved in the community takes a lot of financial commitment, so it’s crucial for the Titans to weigh the costs against the benefits (Zimbalist, 2022). Research shows that community programs with clear goals and measurable results tend to get more funding and sponsorships. To keep these programs running long-term, the Titans’ leadership should look into different funding options, apply for government grants, and develop steady revenue streams.

The Titans' 2030 plan should focus on long-term community strategies, like getting young fans involved, making a real social impact, and building strong partnerships. Smith and Westerbeek (2007) highlight how sports can boost health awareness, youth education, and community engagement, especially when corporate social responsibility (CSR) is part of the strategy. Westerbeek and Eime (2022) also stress the need for sports teams to adapt to changing fan interests and new tech. To stay ahead, the Titans should keep improving their outreach while balancing business goals with grassroots growth.
