In modern times, we live in a world were we can constantly see what is happening around us. We rely on the media to tell us what is right, and what is wrong. We depend on their articles to tell us what is going on even if they have to censor. We see the media as Tenable, and we base our opinions on theirs. This can be pernicious to our reasoning. This has happened many times in the past, like with Michael Jackson. He was the king of pop, and when he passed away, he was venerated by his fans due to his class and talent on the dance floor. He was canonised by people when the media rumoured that he died of overdose. People like Michael Jackson are portrayed as tragic characters. Their stories are similar to fictional characters; which made decisions that led to their destruction. Hamlet, is a tragic character whose story really fits in with Michaels. Michael has serious obsessions about his body, such as hamlet had an obsession towards death and his fathers murderer. They both had little friends since they had massive trust issues. In Hamlets case people were spying on him, and Michael was reported several times talking about his trust issues with women and the media. They both show elusive behaviours throughout their lives. Hamlet was a hero in Denmark, loved by his people. Michael was the king of pop, loved by his fans. The similarities go on and on. The media has sovereignty over us, using tragic stories to control our opinions on famous people around the world.
A life of drugs and obsessions takes a sane man to insanity. As i stated before, the media influences our reasoning by creating tragic stories about famous people. Many times, these stories can relate to those of fictional tragic characters, like the ones we see on shakesperes play, Hamlet. Hamlet himself, has a life that can deeply relate to Michael Jackson. Michael was an enigma in the music industry, such as hamlet is of Shakespeare's play. As I stated before, Michael has serious obsessions over his body, such as hamlet had an obsession towards death. We can see this obsession in Act 4 scene 4 when he says, "To hide the slain? Oh, from this time forth, My thoughts be bloody, or be nothing worth!". Besides this, they both also had massive trust issues. Hamlet has people spying on him constantly, and Michael was reported several times talking about trust issues in interviews. Hamlet was a hero in Denmark, loved by his people. Michael was the king of pop, loved by his fans. The similarities go on and on. They both had a strong rancour towards themselves, which in Michaels case, led to a severe drug addiction that led to his death. Hamlet had people constantly breathing on his neck trying to understand what he was going through. As he says, "You would pluck out the heart of my mystery." In other words, Hamlet is saying how people would give him no respect or privacy in his life, because they were always trying to understand him. This is just like the effect the media had in Michael Jackson; they dug into his life to get stories. In this way, Media describes famous people as tragic characters which deeply connect with fictional ones found in shakes peers plays and other novels.
The media exploits a actors flaws to use against them. In Michael Jacksons case, this was one the thing that led to his depression. Micheal suffered from a skin condition called vitiligo, which created patches of different colours in his skin. To treat this condition, he took a number of different medication, which resulted in the overall change of his skin colour. The media didn't think the same. Hundreds of articles were written about his skin colour change, but many just dismissed the condition from which he claimed to have. One article that ought my attention was an article written in CNN, (http://edition.cnn.com/2009/HEALTH/07/06/skin.color.vitiligo/)They claimed he did it for obsessive and racist reasons about his perception of perfection. This is called Body Dysmorphic disorder, which according to adaa.org is a" psychological disorder in which a person becomes obsessed with imaginary defects in their appearance."
Besides exploiting their flaws, the media distorts and alternates the truth about tragic characters. They do this to obtain the attention of the people and to gain money by spreading rumours. This can be really had for actors to deal with, since they can do a lot about it, just dismiss the rumours. In Michael's life, this was one of the things which truly led to his demise. Some common rumour that gained popularity during Michael's life were really disturbing. They spread around rumours that he was a child molester, and that he owned child pornography. Fox News created an article about this several years ago in http://www.foxnews.com/entertainment/2014/08/11/maids-reveal-michael-jacksons-filth-and-perversion.html. They said that he changed the colour of his skin for a different reason for which he actually did, which is what I wrote about earlier. Even after His death, they rumoured that he was still alive and that he faked his death to escape persecution from the media. All of these rumours made Michael question life itself, as it is reported that he died of an overdose (which could have been suicide). As hamlet said in act 3 scene one, "To be, or not to be; that is the question" Was it worth to live with the pressure that he constantly faced from the media? Considering the way he died, its safe to say he didn't think it was.
The effect the media can have on people is enormous. As we saw with Michael, the pressure from the media eventually lead to his death. But the media doesn't only affect the life of the person it is taking about; it also affects ours. They censor us from the truth, and make us become judgemental and prejudicial. The media heavily influences the way we live our life, because we depend on them to tell us whats right and whats wrong. In a way, this turns us into virtual zombies, that live by the standards that we see on the news.

Bibliography

"Michael Jackson: King of Pain." Psychology Today.
