I love them so much and I would feel extremely guilty if I wasn't able to save them. I think the second thing I would take is my phone, because I would want to use it to call for help and to tell family and friends what happened and if me and my family are okay. Many Americans stress the importance of self-sufficiency and independence. This part of our culture causes many to attribute what happens in the world to the individual's actions rather than any outside forces. Many Americans believe that its your own responsibility to take care of yourself and nobody is obligated to help you. A really upsetting effect from this value being so heavily ingrained in our society is that many Americans attribute poverty to poor people's own decisions and are less likely to support government intervention to help them.
Another value I consider to be typically American is patriotism. I think typical Americans tend to be very patriotic. As a kid I was very impatient for most things, I was really only patient for things I found important but even then I wasn't very patient. I was an extremely hyper kid, I loved to flip and climb.  To give you an idea of just how hyper I was, When I was a kid my parents had to put a lock on the fridge because I would climb it. They also had to put two gates on top of eachother because I would climb over if there was only one. The only things I was really patient for was drawing and flipping. As I've gotten older I've realized and accepted that things don't always happen fast, and that I need to become more patient. 
Another value I've learned since elementary school is moderation. I used to be very bad at moderating myself. As a kid I would tear through bags of candy without fail, eating all of it in one sitting. Sometimes I would get stomachaches because of this but I still didn't learn. Another example is one time I went to this place with tons of swing sets and trampolines and I found a tire swing. I loved it and thought it was so fun so I proceeded to spin myself for atleast 10 minutes. On the car ride home I puked. My whole life I've always been very empathetic. A lot of my friends say that I'm their favorite person to rant to because I always get upset with them haha. 
Another value I believe I will have in 5 years from now is optimism. I've always been an extremely optimistic person. Most of the time I will find a positive in a bad situation, I like being optimistic because it helps me make my friends feel better when they're not having a good time. She is an extremely caring, passionate, and dependable person, She always does her best to help people whenever she can. Growing up, I've learned many of these values from her. She has taught me kindness, generosity, punctuality, open-mindedness, selflessness, and so much more.
She's a social worker, so her current job and her previous jobs all involved helping people in some way.  She has been a terrific role model and I'm so happy to be able to call such an amazing person my mom.
My dad has also had a very big impact on my personal values. He is the hardest working, most dedicated, diligent, and adaptable person I know. He's amazing at doing so many things. Like for example, right now he's in the process of building us a deck. The other day the deck inspector came to check on his progress, after inspecting it he joked about having some deck builders come over to look at our deck so far and take notes. My dad has done so many different projects with our house and did them all exceptionally well. How hard he works is so inspiring to me and it motivates me to be better. I've learned so many values from my dad and I'm so thankful to him because of it.
