Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, believes that India’s energy transition will depend on strengthening the complete power ecosystem, including transmission infrastructure, grid flexibility and energy storage solutions.

“Renewable energy growth must be supported by the infrastructure required to absorb and deliver power efficiently. The focus has to move from capacity creation to effective power delivery,” said Ratul Puri.

India added more than 54 GW of renewable energy capacity between April 2025 and March 2026, reflecting the country’s strong momentum in clean energy deployment. However, rapid capacity addition has also highlighted challenges associated with transmission availability, grid balancing and renewable energy utilisation.

The growing instances of renewable energy curtailment indicate that generation capacity alone cannot determine the success of the energy transition. Without adequate transmission networks and flexibility solutions, a portion of the electricity generated from renewable sources may not reach consumers when it is available.

Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, believes India is moving into an “era of electricity” where transmission infrastructure, battery storage, solar-plus-storage solutions and smart grids will play a crucial role alongside renewable energy expansion. According to him, the future of India’s power sector will depend on creating an ecosystem capable of delivering reliable power on demand at the lowest delivered cost. This will require focused investments in:

• energy storage

• grid flexibility

• transmission networks

• localised power infrastructure

Speaking about the country's growing electricity needs, Ratul Puri noted that India's peak power demand touched record levels of around 270 GW during the May 2026 heatwave, reflecting not only seasonal demand but also the steady rise in electricity consumption driven by manufacturing, electric mobility and expanding digital infrastructure. The trend highlights the growing need for stronger transmission and distribution networks alongside large-scale renewable energy deployment.

According to Ratul Puri, Independent Power Producers (IPPs) are rapidly evolving from power generators into integrated energy transition partners. As the sector moves beyond standalone power generation towards integrated energy solutions, IPPs are increasingly focusing on:

• energy storage

• grid support and transmission infrastructure

• hybrid power solutions

• energy management

He believes that the industry's focus has shifted from simply adding megawatts of renewable capacity to delivering reliable, flexible and long-term energy solutions. IPPs are also supporting the electrification of transport, industrial decarbonisation and the growing energy demand from sectors such as mobility, manufacturing and data infrastructure.

Separately, a CRISIL–FICCI report on India's energy transition highlights that Energy Storage Systems (ESS), Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS), Pumped Hydro Storage (PHS) and Thermal Energy Storage (TES) will be critical to ensuring reliable and sustainable power supplies. The report notes that while renewable capacity will continue to expand rapidly, transitional power and flexible generation will remain essential for maintaining grid stability, meeting peak demand and supporting Round-the-Clock (RTC) electricity availability.

Ratul Puri also emphasises that cleaner energy systems supported by a phased and balanced transition will be critical to:

• supporting economic growth

• enabling industrial expansion

• strengthening energy security

India’s power sector is moving into a phase where reliability and flexibility are becoming just as important as renewable capacity addition. As electricity demand rises across sectors such as mobility, manufacturing and data infrastructure, the grid will require cleaner power sources capable of supplying electricity beyond peak solar generation hours.

This is increasing the importance of solar-plus-storage, hybrid power and dispatchable renewable energy solutions, which can provide a more stable and predictable power supply while enabling higher renewable integration into the grid. These technologies also help reduce transmission constraints, improve system efficiency and strengthen long-term energy security as India builds a more resilient electricity ecosystem.

In one of his recent interviews, Ratul Puri said Hindustan Power's long-term vision remains focused on achieving 5 GW of installed capacity by 2028. AI can further strengthen this transition by making electricity systems smarter. Intelligent software can analyse vast amounts of operational data, forecast electricity demand, predict renewable energy generation and optimise battery charging and discharging. Better forecasting enables utilities to balance supply and demand more efficiently, reducing energy waste and improving the utilisation of renewable resources. The International Energy Agency has identified AI as an important tool for improving grid operations and supporting the integration of clean energy into electricity systems.

India's electricity network is also becoming more complex as renewable energy capacity continues to expand. Managing variable solar and wind generation requires faster decision-making and greater operational flexibility. AI can help utilities monitor grid conditions in real time, anticipate potential bottlenecks and improve system performance before disruptions occur. These capabilities can enhance grid reliability while enabling higher levels of renewable energy integration.

For Ratul Puri, the discussion around AI is not limited to rising electricity consumption. It is equally about creating an energy ecosystem that is intelligent, flexible and prepared for future demand. When deliberating the creation of an energy-secure India, the narrative often revolves around two contrasting factors. While solar and wind energy continue to establish new growth benchmarks, another segment of the industrial conundrum lies unaddressed. Agriculture, heavy manufacturing and chemical refineries cannot operate efficiently on solar power alone, as these sectors require high temperatures. Moreover, most clean energy components are imported, leaving the nation vulnerable to trade wars, geopolitical flashpoints and global market disruptions.

It is against this backdrop that one needs to view India’s historical asset: coal. The Union minister for coal and mines recently noted that coal gasification will be crucial in supporting energy security, curbing imports and boosting industrial growth. The country’s coal reserves are estimated at almost 400 billion tonnes, among the world’s largest. Coal still plays a major role in India’s energy generation, accounting for 55% of its energy mix and almost 74% of electricity generation. Further, coal’s annual demand of around one billion tonnes is anticipated to soar significantly by 2047. Despite the reliance on coal, India is making steady progress towards meeting its net-zero commitment by 2070.

Besides, the government is promoting coal gasification to convert coal into syngas. With an overall investment exceeding ₹85,000 crore, India plans to target a coal gasification capacity of 100 million tonnes by 2030. The gasification process converts coal into syngas, which is used to produce cleaner fuels, fertilisers, chemicals and hydrogen. Being an efficient approach, it enables the sustainable use of domestic resources. 

Given that around 83% of crude oil, 50% of natural gas and more than 90% of fertilisers and methanol are imported, the Central Government has prioritised energy security as a strategic imperative. According to Ratul Puri, It is in this context that coal gasification offers a realistic energy transition strategy spanning the gap between intense industrial growth and a low-carbon future. Coal gasification is part of India’s general strategy to maximise the use of its rich coal reserves and enhance energy security. The coal gasification mission could potentially save the country ₹60,000 to ₹90,000 crore annually via import substitution, while creating a low-carbon chemicals and fertiliser economy.

Some elaboration is needed on the coal gasification process, which transforms solid coal into synthetic gas or syngas – a blend of carbon dioxide, carbon monoxide, hydrogen and methane. This is obtained by reacting coal at extremely high temperatures with a limited amount of steam and oxygen, rather than by complete combustion.

Syngas can also function as the basic building block for value-added industrial segments. In agriculture, it can be processed into ammonia and then used to produce affordable domestic urea fertilisers. In transport, it is converted to methanol, which can be used for fuel blending and to reduce oil imports. Gasification contributes to the local production of key chemicals used in the manufacture of paints, plastics and pharmaceuticals, among others.

Gasification creates an opportunity for India to leverage its abundant coal reserves and reduce its forex outflows for imports of natural gas, fertilisers and chemicals. The ability to manufacture essential commodities locally also helps stabilise input costs and protect local supply chains from global markets. Although gasification is a fossil-fuel-based process, it acts as an ecological bridge, unlike legacy coal combustion. Since gasification occurs within a highly controlled, sealed chemical reactor, it captures sulphur, particulate matter and other byproducts more easily and efficiently than scraping them from the chimneys of traditional power plants.

Gasification streams concentrated CO₂ and the technology is best suited for Carbon Capture, Utilisation and Storage (CCUS) systems. This captured carbon can be safely stored deep underground or reused to make commercial products such as solid carbonates and synthetic fuels. Through carbon management and the integration of biomass into gasification reactors, the net carbon footprint of the country’s heavy industries can be reduced.

The transformation of coal into value-added industrial products helps in safeguarding the nation’s critical manufacturing base, even as it promotes the Make in India mission. For Chairman Ratul Puri, The future of coal in India now transcends its role of fuelling traditional power grids. Instead, it focuses on powering a self-reliant, well-diversified industrial ecosystem to ensure India remains energy-secure, increasingly competitive and progressively greener in the global enterprise landscape.

India’s renewable energy story is entering a new phase. Competitive tariff auctions, declining costs and strong investments have helped renewable energy become mainstream. As renewable capacity continues to grow, greater attention is now being given to how this power can be stored, transmitted and delivered when it is needed.

According to Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, India’s energy landscape is undergoing a structural shift from prioritising the lowest cost renewable generation to building a power system that delivers dependable, dispatchable and affordable clean energy. As renewable energy penetration increases, the power sector can no longer remain focused only on adding generation capacity. The emphasis is increasingly on how effectively that capacity can serve the wider power system and meet rising electricity demand. This is particularly relevant as India progresses towards its 2030 non-fossil fuel capacity goals. Renewable energy procurement is therefore gradually moving beyond a lowest tariff approach to one that considers the value of dependable power, balancing capability and long-term system economics.

This also changes how the cost of renewable power needs to be assessed. Evaluating projects solely on tariff competitiveness is no longer sufficient as renewable integration grows. Transmission constraints, intermittency, balancing requirements, storage needs and curtailment risks all have a bearing on the actual cost of delivering power. This makes a lowest systemic cost approach increasingly relevant. 

Chairman Ratul Puri says that Storage-backed renewable and hybrid projects may carry a higher upfront cost but can reduce pressure on the wider power system, improve the utilisation of renewable energy and strengthen the availability of power when it is needed. Procurement strategies are consequently beginning to place greater value on capacity, operational responsiveness and dependable power delivery alongside competitive pricing. Hybrid projects that combine solar, wind and battery storage are particularly important in this context as they can help meet peak demand while providing reliable and dispatchable clean power. Flexibility services also need greater recognition. These services were traditionally managed through conventional generation and system operations without being explicitly valued. In a power system with increasing renewable penetration, ramping reserves, frequency response and fast response balancing services are becoming essential to manage variability and maintain system performance. Energy storage will be central to this transition. Battery Energy Storage Systems (BESS) and pumped hydro storage can provide the capacity needed to integrate more renewable power by reducing variability, minimising curtailment and improving clean energy utilisation. However, expanding storage deployment will require supportive policy frameworks, faster regulatory approvals, streamlined land and water clearances and continued expansion of storage-linked renewable projects.

Grid readiness remains another serious issue. Several Indian states have significant solar and wind potential, but inadequate transmission infrastructure can delay project connectivity and power evacuation. States therefore need to play a more proactive role in planning and commissioning intrastate transmission networks that are aligned with renewable project timelines and national transmission planning.

Transmission upgrades alone will not be enough. Distribution infrastructure will also need to be strengthened through modern transmission lines, substations and transformers. This will improve renewable energy evacuation, reduce congestion and losses and support the integration of distributed solar power.

Ratul Puri added that a more responsive power system will also require stronger ancillary service markets. Expanding mechanisms for ramping reserves, frequency response and fast response balancing services will help manage renewable variability and enable higher levels of renewable energy penetration.

India’s experience is part of a broader global shift. Countries are increasingly recognising that expanding renewable capacity must go hand in hand with investments in storage, balancing markets and demand side flexibility. Experiences from regions such as the European Union show that higher renewable penetration requires these investments to maintain dependable power supply.

For India, the long term objective is to strike the right balance between renewable energy expansion, system responsiveness and dependable power delivery. The next phase of India’s energy transition will depend on how well we can store clean power and deliver it where and when it is needed. A combination of clean energy generation, energy storage, modern grid infrastructure and efficient market mechanisms will be central to that transition.

As manufacturing expands, digital infrastructure grows and electrification spreads across sectors such as transport, electricity is becoming increasingly central to India's economic development. At the same time, the country is adding solar and wind capacity at an unprecedented pace, creating both opportunities and new challenges for the power system.

Ratul Puri, Chairman of Hindustan Power, has argued that India is moving towards an “era of electricity” in which renewable generation will need to be supported by transmission infrastructure, energy storage and smarter grid systems. The underlying idea is straightforward: adding generation capacity is only part of the transition. India must also ensure that electricity can be moved, stored and delivered when and where it is needed.

India’s Changing Power Landscape

India's electricity demand is being driven by a combination of economic growth, industrialisation, urbanisation and increasing electrification. Manufacturing needs dependable power, while data centres and other digital infrastructure are creating new sources of electricity demand. The expanding use of electric vehicles will add another dimension to this changing demand profile.

The International Energy Agency expects India's electricity demand to grow by an average of around 6.4% annually through 2030, with industry, cooling, households, services, agriculture and transport all contributing to the increase.

Renewable energy is becoming an increasingly important part of meeting this demand. According to Ember's Global Electricity Review 2026, solar became India's largest source of clean electricity in 2025, accounting for 9.4% of total electricity generation. Wind and solar together accounted for 14% of India's electricity mix.

These numbers demonstrate the scale of India's renewable energy expansion. But they also highlight a more complex question: how can increasing volumes of variable renewable electricity be integrated into a power system where demand does not always coincide with renewable generation?

Generation Is Only One Part of the Transition

Solar power is strongest during the day, while electricity demand can remain high or rise after sunset. This is becoming particularly important as cooling demand increases. The IEA notes that India's summer peak net load typically occurs around 8 p.m., when solar generation is no longer available.

Wind generation, meanwhile, varies according to weather conditions and location. This means that a power system with a growing share of renewable energy needs greater flexibility to balance fluctuations in both generation and demand.

Transmission infrastructure therefore becomes just as important as generation capacity.

Much of India's renewable generation is being developed in regions with strong solar and wind resources, while major industrial, commercial and urban demand centres may be located elsewhere. Electricity must consequently travel across increasingly long distances, making the expansion and modernisation of transmission networks essential to the country's energy transition.

The Grid Is Becoming a Strategic Priority

The consequences of inadequate transmission capacity are already becoming visible.

An Ember analysis found that India curtailed around 300 GWh of renewable electricity because of transmission constraints during January to March 2026, particularly in the Northern and Western regions. Total renewable energy curtailment during the quarter was estimated at around 470 GWh, with the remainder attributed to system inflexibility.

The episode illustrates a fundamental challenge facing India's energy transition: renewable generation can expand faster than the infrastructure required to evacuate and integrate that electricity.

Ember also found that India had achieved only about 80% of its annual transmission targets over the preceding five years, highlighting the growing need to coordinate generation and transmission planning more closely.

For policymakers and power sector companies, this makes transmission more than an infrastructure requirement. It is becoming a strategic component of India's clean energy transition.

Storage and Smarter Grids

Transmission alone, however, cannot address every challenge.

As the share of solar and wind increases, India will also require greater access to flexible resources that can respond to changes in generation and demand. Battery energy storage systems can help shift renewable electricity from periods of high generation to periods of higher demand, while also providing grid balancing services.

The IEA has highlighted the growing importance of battery storage in meeting India's evening and night-time electricity requirements. Batteries can help reduce peak demand and ease the need for rapid ramping of conventional generation as solar output declines.

This points towards a more integrated model of power system planning, in which renewable generation, transmission, storage and grid management are developed together rather than treated as separate components.

From Renewable Capacity to Reliable Electricity

This is where the broader argument associated with Ratul Puri becomes particularly relevant.

India's energy transition cannot be measured simply by the number of gigawatts of renewable capacity installed. The more meaningful measure is how effectively that capacity can contribute to reliable electricity supply.

The next phase of the transition will therefore require a combination of continued renewable energy deployment, stronger transmission networks, energy storage and increasingly sophisticated grid management systems.

India has already demonstrated that it can rapidly scale renewable generation. The challenge now is to build the wider electricity system around that growth.

As electricity becomes increasingly central to India's economic development, the country's energy future will depend not only on generating more clean power, but on creating the infrastructure needed to move, store and deliver it reliably.

That is likely to be one of the defining challenges and opportunities of India's transition towards a more electrified and increasingly renewable energy system.

In a press release, Hindustan Power, an integrated power producers said the project involves a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL) which it won through a tender in 2025.

The Ratul Puri led firm secured the financing for this project after around a year from commencing work on the 435 megawatt peak (MWp) solar power project in Lalitpur, Uttar Pradesh. It won this tender from Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Ltd (UPPCL) in April 2025. The power from this project is exceted to be supplied from Lalitpur solar project for the next 25 years. 

The project is among the largest solar projects being developed in Uttar Pradesh and will contribute towards meeting the state’s growing energy requirements through clean power generation. With work now underway, the project is progressing as per the planned development schedule and is set to strengthen Uttar Pradesh’s growing renewable energy capacity.

India’s _energy landscape is undergoing a significant transformation. Awarded to Hindustan Power through a competitive bidding process in 2025, the project is among the largest solar projects being developed in Uttar Pradesh. It has a long-term Power Purchase Agreement (PPA) with Uttar Pradesh Power Corporation Limited (UPPCL), providing a framework for supplying clean power to the state as its energy requirements continue to grow.
