In this pic you can see an area where we start and end our day. It is brightly decorated and not too busy. The blue chairs are usually at the reading table so the children can assemble themselves in a circle. I would love a brightly colored rug to add to this space which would help define the space and give the students their own spot to sit. As I read Anita Archer's book this summer, I read it again (on pg 111) and so, once again I arranged the desks facing forward. The slight bend on the end desks makes the rows seem softer to me. Students can choose books, puzzles, or sticker station and magnet trays on the wall. There are soft chairs here and a carpet. Materials are easily accessible to students and neat and organized. This is a nice space where students can make choices after small group activities are done. I think it is inviting with bright colors and variety of things to do quietly. On the opposite side of the room are noisier choices such as blocks and housekeeping, doll house and cars. The room is easy to navigate and all appropriate materials are accessible to the students. The layout of the room is set up to help with classroom management. For example; the tape on the floor so students know where to line up when it is time do do so, and work tables divide centers from circle time area and quiet areas. The students work is hung throughout the room and there are picture daily schedules and class expectations. This is my second year in my "new" classroom and after reading Explicit Instruction and looking back on it, this year I decided to do a whole new re-arrangement of my classroom.  I purchased 4 new book shelves, I created a reading nook, I added some emoji pillows for comfort, and I created my computer center. I also re-arranged my desks so that they are not facing straight ahead, they are "kitty-corner" now, as in a movie theater so that the students can see the smart board better.  I also purchased several new storage containers to help me remain organized.  Administration and various teachers have commented on the warmth, cleanliness and organization of my "new" classroom this year!!

 

10/29/16 AFTER:  I have updated my reflection with "after" photos.  I have added a "Calming Corner" to my classroom to assist students who need a little break during the day.  It is limited to no more than 5 minutes and includes some sensory items.

I took this picture of my room because I like the look. I think the curved desks that are in the direction of the Eno board enable each child to see what is being displayed. The counters to the left and the right are not cluttered but have baskets for folders and other work the children have to do. The tubs in the back left corner of the classroom hold a variety of manipulatives that the students and teachers can easily access. I like the look of my room and feel very comfortable there. I looked at the before picture of my calming corner. It looked really blah to me and I thought, "I'm not sure if this corner would calm me down." So, I decided to make it a little bit more inviting. I bought a colorful rug to define the space. I added three mini posters to the wall. One introduces the corner, the other gives cool down strategies and the third is an emoji picture that asks, "how are you feeling today." I also bought a seat cushion to sit on instead of the triangle mat on which some kids were rolling around. In the basket, I added some silly putty, play doh and a couple of stuffies. I bought a timer that is easy to set and rings and lights up when the child's five minutes are over. I am still waiting for the cord cover to come. I didn't like how the outlet was right in the calming space but had no other option in my classroom. The outlet cover is due to come next week. 

I like the new corner and have had positive feedback from the students. When I compare the before and after pics of this corner, there is no doubt in my mind that the corner now is a lot more inviting and a lot more calming. I have spent hours creating this space over the summer. After reading chapter five in Explicit Instruction I evaluated the space I created and made a few small changes.I have designed areas for specific activities. I have an area for a large group time, tables in the middle for small group activities and stations, and centers for play along the sides. There is a quiet area with bean bag and stuffies, books, magnets on the wall, sticker station, puzzles. All materials are easily accessible to students and proper use and clean up have been modeled. Students and teachers can move easily around the room and all parts of the room easily seen. The classroom is kept orderly and organized because of the layout. Students work is displayed through out the room as are the class schedules, jobs, motivations, and rules to help students move smoothly through the day. I moved furniture around in the block area and sensory around to make movement easier for students. I added cookie trays and magnets to the wall in the quiet area for more quiet choices, and I made the housekeeping area bigger. I am constantly evaluating how the room is functioning for students learning and making changes accordingly.
