It was used by Melvin Calvin. The purpose was to elucidate the pathways of carbon fixation. There are 3 opening one is a funnel for algae, one is to pump circulate air and Carbon Dioxide, and the last one is to use hot methanol to kill samples. There is a light shining on the algae.

1. First algae was funneled into the lollipop
2.They injected Carbonic Acid that contained Carbon-14 this helped because Carbon-14 is an isotope that can be traced.
3. The mixture was exposed to light, which resulted in the algae being killed
4. Hot methanol was used to kill the samples rapidly
5. The dead samples were analyzed using 2-D chromatography which separated the carbon compounds
