China endured “100 years of humiliation”

Resentment of foreign domination provoked the Boxer Rebellion 1898-1901

In the Early 20th Century, peasants struggled to survive due to heavy government taxes 

1911 Uprising in Central China brought together peasants, townspeople and students

The leader of the revolutionaries was Sun Yat Sen, he formed the revolutionary league in 1905

Most of Southern China was swept up in the movement that led to the establishment of a Chinese Republic

The Qing Dynasty that ruled over China since 1644 had finally collapsed

Sun was declared the president of a new National Assembly

• Republic was formally established on January 1, 1912

Sun resigned in March in favor of the conservative army leader, Yuan Shikai

August 1912: GMD was formed; led by Sun 

Yuan failed to live up to expectations, and upon his death in 1916, his subordinates seized pieces their own provinces and refused to acknowledge the rule of the Republic. This marked the beginning of the Warlord Era

Following the end of World War I and handing over of German claims in China to Japan, there were nationwide demonstrations protesting the government

In 1925, Jiang Jieshi took leadership of the GMD and started a campaign against the warlords

• The communists, including Mao Zedong, supported the efforts of the GMD

However, the communists as a threat to hs authority

• Japanese were a “disease of the skin” but the communists were a “disease of the heart”
• Began ordering army to attack communists, led to thousands killed

By 1928, Jiang had overcome the warlords sufficiently to capture Beijing and establish a central government with Nanjing as the capital

First organized communist event during the May 4th protest 1919 against giving Chinese territory to Japan

Mao was able to gain power by becoming a member of the 1st National Congress of the CCP after the party was first formed in 1921 by the Russian comintern

By working as a GMD political organizer when the CCP and GMD were united he was elected in 1924 to the central committee of both parties

Broke off in 1927 when Jiang split the GMD from CCP, Mao attempted to establish his own brand of communism in rural areas

First revolt in Hunan 1927 was easily suppressed

Led followers to Jinggangshan mountains where he formed the Red Army

By 1928, totaled over 12,000 men

Poorly Equipped and Relied on Guerrilla tactics

1929 Mao moved his troops to the Jianxi province and established the Jiangxi soviet.

Mao became CCP party sec and ordered land distribution, encouraged peasants to kill those suspected of betrayal

Mao defended against Jiang’s 4 campaigns in the 1930s, however, the GMD forced the Communists to escape by surrounding them preventing access to supplies, started the Long March

Only 5k of 100k survived the 13,000km ordeal

After March Settled in Yan’an Soviet

Established Land Redistribution and rent control w/o mass killing

Mao overtook all political decision making and wrote a number of works there

No press or outside communication
