The big guys that rule the schools. They play the most pivotal role in the education of a state. For example the Virginia State Board of Education or VDOE.

They control and oversee the thousands of school districts in the state.

Their role is to collect the policies the Federal Department of Education creates as well as create their own (Wills & Beckham, n.d.).

Each state has their own board and each work in unique ways due to the fact that they have to follow the code of their state (Wills & Beckham, n.d.).

They set statewide curriculum standards, establish graduation requirements, determine teacher qualifications, create testing and assessment programs, implement Every Student Succeeds Act, and develop rules and regulations for the administration and state programs (Virginia Department of Education, n.d.)

They as well hold meetings open to the public which discuss the broader issues within education. Such as funding or COVID protocols.

Creating a place where citizens can actively create a better schooling environment or improve on the one already established (Maeroff, 2010).

The lowest on the branch. This is what it all connects to.

Every public school is ran by a school board at both the state and local level. For example the Norfolk public schools are ran and overseen by the Norfolk Public School Board system, which is then in turn ran by the VDOE (Virginia Department of Education).

Each public school receives and must abide by the policies created and edited by the school board members.

How a public school succeeds is purely off of how much the school board members care about their work (Maeroff, 2010)
