I think Ratliff's book was very informative as well a innovative. It was not all new information to me, but some of it was definietly some new ideas that I had not thought about or recognized. Ratliff looked at things in a way that I hadn't before and it was a great read, very eye opening. I have been in music, and by that I mean I was in orchestra for 7 years of my life, and he taught me new concepts I hadn't heard of before. I found it a very interesting read and I like how he incorportated musical examples, as this really helped me to fully grasp the concept he was talking about. I also enjoyed he had a playlist at the end of all his chapters, I thought this was a brilliant way to fully grasp the concept. All in all, I learned a lot from Ratliff's book and his playlists.

Things I liked and Disliked

I really liked how Ratliff incorporated musical examples and talked in depth about them. I also liked that he had a playlist of all the examples that you could listen to. However, I wish that Ratliff would have incorporated maybe a greater mix of genre's in his book. I felt that there was a lot of jazz, classical, and maybe a few contemporary songs. I feel that for this book to be more relatable for the younger crowd, putting a few more songs from different genre's could be beneficial.

How Has it Changed My Listening Experience?

From reading Ratliff's book, I am able to listen to music with a more intentive ear. I hear music and I notice the shift in pace or tone and I take note of it. I listen closely for the artist's voice and see if I can hear the change in afliction or see if there was a part that was maybe imrpovised. Reading this book has actually appriciate jazz more than I did before. I feel that he puts an emphasis on jazz and describes it in such a way that it just made me want to listen to it more. Overall, I don't just listen to music, I hae noticed that I try and pick apart the piece and listen to each harmony/section. I listen to not only the vocals, I try to pick each instruments part out and focus on their rhythem. This book has made my appriciation for music much greater than it was before.
