The toxics reduction problem area of the Furniture Manufacturing sector is mainly the paints they use on their furniture. This company uses conventional solids paint, which are easier to use, but create volatile organic compounds, which causing air pollution. These paints also contain xylene and ethylbenzene which are recognized by the NPRI as pollutants. Overall, this sector also produces a lot of hazardous waste.

It is more profitable to prevent pollution from occuring in the first place, than to deal with it after it is produced. Even if it can be more expensive to implement eco friendly equipment and methods, in the long run, more effectively using, recycling and discarding of resources typically saves companies large amounts of money. For example, in the furniture manufacturing industry, using on-site solvent distillation and reuse annually saves 45$ K and has a payback of less than three years. After these three years these companies will be saving large amounts of money. This shows that for companies in this sector it is much more profitable to prevent pollution that have to pay extra to clean it up after it has been produced.

Not only is this profitable for the companies, but, is it also more beneficial for the environment. It is much better for high levels of pollution to never happen than to try to reverse it after the fact when ecosystems and organisms have already been effected. This prevention of pollutants is a much more sustainable way for companies to produce their products.

5. The Ontario Government's Encouragement of Green Chemistry in This Industry

1. The government has started training on their new toxic reduction plans and summaries. This plan as well as proper training on how to create them hold companies responsible for their impact and allows the government to easily see and access information on the company's use of toxic substances.

2. The Ontario government has the ministry conducting compliance activities. This allows them to check in with companies to ensure that they are following the requirements of the act and regulation.

3. The government created a site-specific financial assistance program for the reduction of toxic products. This finical assistance allowed a small number of manufacturing facilities (15) to get half the funding for their green implementations.

4. The government provided funding to green research at Trent and Queen University. This allowed the researchers the ability to find green solutions the reduce harmful toxins used in industries.
