The tone of the poem is mostly optimistic and kind of malicious. It achieves being optimistic by talking about the free bird and how the caged bird sings for freedom. On the other hand, it achieves being malicious because of words like rage, nightmare, and scream. These words contributed an almost scary aspect to the poem.

The poem uses very good diction, including words like seldom, which was made to explain how much the bird sees through the narrow cage. Seldom means it happens rarely, adding to how much the caged bird sees the outside world, contributing to the idea of being trapped.

One example of figurative language is, "And dips his wing in the orange sun rays." This is an example of imagery since the author uses visual words to allow the reader to understand what this situation looks like.

Some sound devices found in the text include, "His shadow shouts a nightmare scream," and, "For the caged bird sings of freedom." When it talks about the shadow and what it is doing, the reader can imagine the bird's shadow screaming, which adds in conveying the tone. Also, in the multiple cases where it talks about the bird singing for freedom, you can almost hear the bird singing. This also greatly helps convey the tone.
