Quote: Simon discovered that there was no beastie and decided to go and tell the boys, but they mistake him for the beastie. "There were no words, and no movements but the tearing of teeth and claws. Then the clouds opened and let down the rain like a waterfall", (p. 153).

Analysis: Before Simon is brutally killed by the other boys, a dark storm rages over the island. This darkness represents the evil that lurks on the Island and only appears when bad things occur. The storm coincides with the dark to blind the boys so they are even more scared. This fear and lack of vision is what leads to the death of Simon because the boys mistake him for the beastie.

A sick fear and rage swept him. Fiercely he hit out at the filthy thing in front of him..." (p.185).

Analysis: Ralph is tired of the beastie (savagery) and all the pain and death it has caused. "He was a chief now in truth; and he made stabbing motions with his spear. From his left hand dangled Piggies broken glasses." (p. 168)

Analysis: Ralph took the specs to create fire. Fire is a necessity for anyone trying to survive. It is needed for warmth and cooking. Whoever has the ability to make fire will surely survive and by taking Piggies specs, Jack ensures us that he will survive. The specs symbolize survival.

"Piggies glasses flew off and tinkled on the rocks. 'One sides broken'. (p. 71).

Analysis: Piggies glasses symbolize survival and the ability to use science to survive. "Ralph too was fighting to get near, to get a handful of that brown, vulnerable flesh. The desire to squeeze and hurt was over-mastering", (p.115).

Analysis: After the boys hunted the animal, they wanted to get another taste of the savagery they had committed. A knot of boys, making a great noise that he had not noticed, were heaving and pushing at a rock. As he turned, the base cracked and the whole mass toppled into the sea so that a thunderous plume of spray leapt halfway up the cliff. 'Stop it! Stop it!'" (p.107).

Analysis: The boys are naturally wanting to have fun and because of that they are using valuable time to throw rocks into the ocean. Round the squatting child was the protection of parents and school and policeman and the law", (p.62)

Analysis: When Roger returns from the forest with Maurice, he begins to bully the littluns for fun. He even begins to start throwing rocks at Henry. Roger made sure the rocks he threw at Henry did not actually hit him. "Now the fire was nearer; those volleying shots were great limbs, trunks even, bursting. The fools! The fools! The fire must be almost at the fruit trees- what would they eat tomorrow?" (p. 198)

Analysis: The fire was supposed to symbolize hope but instead it is actually tearing through the island and devouring all of its natural resources, ones that are crucial to the survival of the boys.
