Through the discussion in class, I learned that child labor has been happening for years in a certain region, Jharkhand, India in order to conduct mica mining. Mica is an important ingredient in cosmetics and is also used in skincare products that promise the consumers glowing and brightening effects. The lack of support from the Indian government has lead to child labor because the children had to give up the opportunities to get an education instead they help their parents to mining mica. The government also fails to see the worth of industry mica which leads to workers' discrimination in the mica industry. For example, the worker works hard every day to collect kilograms of mica only to be paid with a low amount of money which contributes to child labor. The more family members work, the more they can gain money to put food on the table. The people who do mica mining were discriminated but the developers, manufacturers, and retailers gain profits much more than them. This is proof of capitalism in the mica industry which continues to happen because of the high demand for skincare and cosmetics from consumers all over the world. As a person who wears skincare every day, I was triggered by this incident as I support human rights and I am against human discrimination especially child labor. Therefore, I had stopped using any skincare that contains mica. Luckily, I don't wear makeup but if in the future I might happen to wear it, I will make sure to choose cosmetics that don't contain any mica from India.
