She spent the majority of her childhood in Argentina with her father and described her childhood being a lonely time in her life. She could speak both French and Spanish fluently. Studying at the École de Photographie de la Ville de Paris, she had abandoned painting for photography. 

She had become a part of the café lifestyle, attracting many Parisian avant-garde artists for her beauty. At this time, she shortened her name from Henrietta Theodora Markovitch to Dora Maar.
