After watching the video discuss it in reference to the novel Deadly Unna?. How does it relate to the idea of preconceived ideas that society has to colour of one's skin? You need to write a well developed paragraph using TEEL, make sure you have capitals and punctuation in your correct sentences. Read it out aloud to yourself before posting.

Soon as people are born in modern society everyone is given a label. These labels create the sense of discrimination and the prejudice in this world. There would be a lot less problems if labels weren't given out. It is the way everyone has grown up to give people labels, especially those that are different than ourselves. And in the book Deadly Unna and a world like this it takes the death of a close friend to realise the racism around us.

I am not black, you are not white.. this is a powerful message from a video which relates to Deadly Unna. The novel Deadly Unna is focused around the main character Blacky and how he deals with the racism in his town. The video talks about how, as soon as we are born people give us labels such as our birth place and colour. In the video, Prince tells us that racism starts when people give us labels according to our skin colour and many other things. The same happens in the novel where the people were segregated according to their race and culture. This racism was accepted in the community and considered as normal. The novel and the video both talks about how racism is introduced through labelling people...

This video and the novel "Deadly, Unna?" have a lot in common. One of the key themes of the video is how you cannot be born racist, you are taught it by role models. Similarly to the video, Blacky grows up in a racist town, full of racist people, so it is expected that he too is racist. Blacky changes his attitude and discards the labels and preconcieved ideas of the differences between us, similarly to how the video urges us to do. In the video, the audience is told that racism begins when people give labels according to the colour of their skin and other qualities, and a similar thing happens in the novel, where people are segregated, from living in the Port or the Point, or the rumours about having no windows on houses. This video and the novel both teach how racism is taught through society, not something we are born with.

The book "Deadly Unna?" and the Video " I am not black, your not white", both show us how racism is a pre-conceived idea that we are born into not born as. Both help give us an idea that when we are born we are given label of what we are and how we are meant to be. In the book "Deadly Unna", Gary Black is born into a life were he has been labeled too and has grown up and been taught to be a certain way, but soon changes his view on how he can be. This relates to the video because it is saying that in today's society as soon as someone is born they are given a label of who they are.

Many texts give us the idea that we are born into racism. Society has created a division between people of all races, skin colours and religions. In both Deadly Unna and the video I am not black, you are not white there is the influence of society making us make the choice of treating people differently because of their looks and beliefs. Society has made us think that we can not make our own choices and decisions. In the novel Gary Black grows up in a community filled with people dividing the two towns of indigenous and white people. In the video the characters are describing the same type of divisions as the novel. These relates to the labels given out by society.

Labels are a prominent feature in today's world as people focus on differences instead of equality. The video "I am not black, you are not white" displays similarities in theme to the book "Deadly Unna?". Colour in our society is portrayed as a division between people, the novel also develops this idea of segregation and division as the town prejudices the Indigenous community. Blacky being born into a community where racism and prejudice against the Indigenous is a deep-rooted practice and accepted, immediately disadvantages Blacky into having an equality mindset from the get-go. This gives us the idea that racism is not born with a person; it is taught.

The video 'I am not black, you are not white' discusses the idea that we as individuals need to liberate ourselves from societal constraints and labels. This relates back to 'Deadly Unna?', as Blacky throughout the novel begins to realise the racism within himself and the town. He begins to question his own preconceived ideas of race and he wants to make a stand. The video discusses that labels and stereotypes are placed on people as soon as they are born, much like in the novel where Aboriginal people have harmful stereotypes placed upon them. In Deadly Unna, the town is split in two, the Port and the Point dividing the town into race groups. This complies with the preconceived ideas of race that the video discusses.

As a society, we are taught to form preconceived notions about someone and to label them based on the colour of their skin. This idea of learned racism is heavily present in both the novel Deadly Unna? and the video titled ‘I am not black, you are not white’. In both sources topics such as prejudice and in turn, unlearning prejudice are included and are the main themes of the content. The main character in Deadly Unna? Blacky has to unlearn his prejudice towards the Indigenous community after growing up in a society that holds racist views. The video and the novel both demonstrate the idea of how society unnecessarily labels people by their skin colour from a young age and also how society teaches young children racist ideals. Both Deadly Unna? and the video effectively portray how society labels people by their skin colour and how people are taught to hold racist views. -cindy

Both the video and novel portray an understanding that racism isn't something that a person is born with but taught, Blacky for example became accustomed to racist jokes, comments, and events because of the community he was brought up in and their acceptance to racism. The video outlines that accepting these racist things arent born with him but where taught through his community and those around him. In comparison both the novel and video share both an understanding that racism is taught through society.
