One of the beliefs of the Shakers was that God created man and woman in His image, therefore He has a male and female component, as does everything in the world, including Jesus. They believed that the second coming of Christ would be through a woman, and Lee was thought to be this second coming, resulting in the name “Mother” Ann Lee.
