<title>Negative Impacts of Aging: •	Slower Cognitive Function resulting in frustration, inability to engage in activities previously enjoyed, and perhaps vulnerability to unscrupulous individuals. •	Lessened efficiency of body systems—Example: lack of ability to moderate body temperature and sensory perception, leading to insisting that your waitress microwave your coffee to a temp that is harmful and could cause injury especially since the lining of the esophagus is also decreasing at this time. •	Decreases in Coordination—in older adults this is very dangerous as hip fractures are common and can lead to death. •	Memory Loss resulting in frustration, inability to interact with the world in a positive way and decrease in daily function. •	Isolation due to physical impairments resulting in loneliness, depression, and despair; could lead to suicide. •	Declining overall health—although we all know our time will be up at some point, imminent death can be scary and emotionally devastating. •	Increased reliance on prescription medications creating a vulnerability for dependence with fewer resources such as treatment. Health care providers often overlook substance abuse and misuse among older adults. •	Decreased budgets for older populations and resources such as social security benefits, and health care. •	Pension systems face serious challenges, as the number of beneficiaries are increasing while the number of contributors are declining. •	There is quite often a loss of independence due to many older people having to move to retirement homes as a result of failing or inconsistent health. •	The older population tends to be a targeted and vulnerable group subjected to financial exploitation through unethical business practices, internet scams, and phone scams.</title>

<title>Positive Impacts of Aging: •	Through experiences, older adults have developed a more constructive approach to managing stress. Older adults have the ability to resolve conflict while still maintaining respect and compassion for each other. •	Making the decision to retire can be a very positive impact of aging. Retirement gives the opportunity to explore new activities like volunteering, traveling, exercise, etc. “Among psychological factors, a sense of personal control over life events, including deciding to retire for internally motivated reasons, is strongly linked to retirement satisfaction” (Berk, 2014, p630). • A stronger sense of self-worth and self-esteem. Older adults that are involved in leisure activities, volunteer, make time for their own wants and needs tend to experience a greater sense of self-worth. •	While menopause seems like a challenging and negative part of aging, many actually notice little impact and believe going through this process creates a “new beginning and report improved quality of life” (Berk, 2014, p.506). •	Older adults build friendships and relationships with people who have the same interests. Relationships with common interests can create a positive impact allowing older adults to become more open, caring, and become influential. •	The tendency to manage life in a more positive manner comes with age. According to Berk, it is like seeing a glass as half full because “older adults selectively attend to and better recall emotionally positive over negative information.” (Berk, 2014. P. 605) This preference not only helps the individual become more pliable, it creates an affirmative environment for others and that builds great relationships. •	The option to give back is more realistic with aging especially after children are grown or one has retired. Volunteering, in particular, is one way a sense of civic duty is accomplished but it also helps keep an individual activate and social. •	Flexibility with retirement opens up the ability to move to a new community or choose to be snowbirds. A snowbird can be described as someone that picks and chooses the home to live in based off of preferred activities and weather during seasons. Often this person or couple will leave their first home just winter as winter is beginning and opt to live in a second home in a place like Phoenix Arizona to enjoy a milder climate. Typically a snowbird will return to their primary residence in early spring to enjoy the preferred weather there as well. •	Faith and religious beliefs throughout life can lead to greater spirituality over time. </title>
