Explanation: This altercation between Love and the women is situational irony. This is situational irony because we as a reader do not expect Love to be the hammer murderer that is on the loose(unexpected).

Significance:

Atmosphere- The atmosphere/mood changes when Love takes out the hammer because it shows that Love's mood has changed and the women as well.

Theme- Stephen King has a created a theme here that Love can lead us to do crazy things. "They're for you, Norma" is when he handed the flowers to the women but when the women rejected herself as Norma, the man murders her. This has shown that Love will lead us to do crazy things because it can blind us to the truth and blind us to what we do is morally right. 

Psychoanalysis- Love taking out the hammer has shown that he himself has a unbalanced ego. "He pulled the short-handled hammer out of his coat pocket" indicating that he will murder the women. This shows unbalanced ego because before Love taking out the hammer the women said she isn't Norma. Love probably has not taken this consideration and assuming that Love is mentally crazy he is mad and pulls out a weapon.

Chaos- This has shown the horror element chaos because Love pulling out the hammer is very unexpected because he was depicted has a beautiful and innocent man. Love shows the change of behaviour as well and also shows psychological breakdowns as well.

Evil- Love has shown that he himself is evil. Explanation: This is verbal irony because Love was buying flowers for his "love", then the man asked if he would like to purchase a wedding ring. However, the man probably would not actually sell him the wedding ring, he only said it as a joke and was being sarcastic.

Significance:
Setting - Stephen King used this to have a setting of love. "The young man blushed to the roots of his dark hair", this is showing that he is indeed buying the flowers for a woman.

Explanation: This is a Dramatic irony because the readers knew something was off when the young man named "Love" approached a woman he did not know when she said "Thank you, buy you're mistaken". We knew she was going to get hit with the hammer she didn't until he swung the hammer.

Significance: 

Danger- There was danger because when the stars came out and the sky taken darkened he saw this woman walking from the courtyard, he called out the name 'Norma" the woman probably thought he was talking to a woman behind her until "they drew together, her smile faded". he became to be persistent that she was Norma and told her "it was always for you.." but then the woman knew she was in danger then he "pulled the short-handle hammer out of his coat pocket where it had been all along". Explanation:

The quote above is a display of Situational Irony. After you find out what the young man just did (kill norma with a hammer), he suddenly gives himself a name: Love. This is Ironic because killing someone with a hammer is the opposite of love, yet he proceeds to call himself that.

Significance:

Psychoanalysis, When he kills norma, the man shows that he is favouring the Id. When he calls himself Love, the man's ego is completely unbalanced, he believes that what he did to her was Love. He is in denial with his own mind, a classic coping mechanism.

Danger/Chaos, the man is obviously capable of killing people, him calling himself Love and denying what he did is dangerous. He is unstable, his actions are chaotic with different meanings than what one would expect.

Theme, everyone has a Dark side. Love shows that an unbalanced ego can release the evil within you. Even the happiest young man is capable of murder.
