With hope. Even though there might not be food for him to eat, he still believes if he scavenges hard enough, he can find something good.

 Once there was an Alligator. He was an angry alligator. He was never happy. He doesn't settle for things. If you'd ask him for a favor he would be offended and lash out on everything. 

Once the two needed to settle a fight. The hippo fought with words rather than teeth and apologies rather than fists. The alligator fought with jaws rather than words and claws rather than apologies. 

Which one wins?
