Two boys named Ralph and Piggy, are alone on the beach until they find a shell called a conch to call the other boys to let them know they are on the beach. All of the other boys begin to arrive near them. Once the boys all gather together, they choose a leader, Ralph. Later on, Ralph, Jack, and Samuel go exploring. They are some of the oldest boys. They climb to the top of a mountain and find that they are the only inhabitants of this island. On the walk back they almost kill a pig.
