Ku Klux Klan's Fear of African American Power

Summary:

November 25th in the Bayou Darrow, there was a band of Ku Klux whom attacked several colored men. The men fired upon the Klansman (Jeff Yawn killed) and captured John Bullock. There were 5 or 6 arrest warrants against Yawn within the past twelve months for assaulting colored individuals. Bullock told the militia at Colfax that no individual was safe from their terror. Bullock also makes a free confession, revealing passwords, individuals who were engaged with previous heinous acts and connections of the organization of the driving of white Republicans out of governmental control and preventing colored citizens to vote.

Analysis:

This article shows not only the real results of the Ku Klux Klan violence, but this event reveals to the white citizens of the towns how much fear these Klan members have for the African American community. These members are living with the constant fear that equality and full citizenship for African Americans will lead to dangerous outcomes for the inhabitants of the community. It is important to know that this article was not written by a member of the Ku Klux Klan because if a Klan member had written this, then due to the wording that is in the passages. The author of this article mentioned how one of the members of the Klan, Jeff Yawn, has several arrest warrants on him. The journalist also has basically called out the actions of Sheriff Shelby and his deputy C.C. Nash, stating that the county police “…would never arrest him, therefore showing their affiliation with that party and the Klan existing in Grant”. Even though the members of the Ku Klux Klan are enforcing fear into the hearts of African Americans and making a loud statement to the white embers of the community who are supporters of African American equality, these members are afraid of what is to become of this country. They fear the inevitable rise of power that black voters in America possess, with their population growing fairly large due to a plethora of things; one being the forced increase that was in the slave generations due to white plantation owners wanting more free labor. Even as the Ku Klux Klan threatens many individuals in this small town while revealing their identities to the public that showed their affiliation, they were filled with constant fear of a black insurrection which is what was seen in this article. The fact that Jeff Yawn, an infamous Ku Klux Klan member was killed by the African Americans they were trying to mutilate not only gives hope to those under the threat of the Ku Klux’s hand, but shows the Klan members themselves that African Americans are ready to defend themselves and are not willing to be thrown around and treated like an insignificant thing again. They are people and are finally being seen as people with the right to live in peace.

This short, 4-minute video discusses the Ku Klux Klan during the Era of Reconstruction after the Civil War (1865-1877). In the video, the origin of the KKK and how they spread fear to all races of men across America were both discussed. The emphasis on the Klan's use of white hooded costumes to keep the appearance of ghost-like appearance showed the fear that the Klan held in the beginning of their reign to not be known and to make a statement. As they rose in power and ditched the anonymity, the African Americans increased their rebellion against these acts of violence and revealed the hidden fear that these white Klansmen held inside themselves, which helped African Americans stop their reign from spreading.

Below is the video with the link.
https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VkIWXl2wB6g

In this article, it is discussed the measures the KKK went to in order to push their point across after the Civil War ended; this is known as the Reconstruction Era. In order to change political views and scare African Americans into knowing they are a minority and not equal, the KKK terrorized and killed their people. But very often, the African Americans fought back in order to gain their freedom although the war was supposed to be over. This revolt brought African Americans hope that their lives will improve as long as they work hard and maintain their ground against the Ku Klux Klan as they were not only fighting for their children but their children's children; future generations.

Below is the article with the link.
http://www.georgiaencyclopedia.org/articles/history-archaeology/ku-klux-klan-reconstruction-era
