Voice is something that is hard to define, but you know it when you hear/read it. If you have a favorite author, you could probably take the name away and still know who it is. For example, if I read a Hemingway passage or Salinger or Margaret Atwood, I know the author from his/her voice. You establish voice by being confident in what you are writing about. Stephen King says, as you read, that he believes that "fear is at the root of most bad writing." Voice is also established by word choice and sentence structure. It separates your writing from the crowd.

When writing a story having a healthy amount of details is great. It gives the reader a visual of the setting and the events taking place. Audiences love being able to picture everything they're reading in their heads, just like it was happening right in front of them. Allowing the reader to use their imagination with the details an author has provided is a great strategy.

Vulnerability

While it’s not the easiest thing to do, being vulnerable in your writing can be very important. Revealing the true thoughts or stories of your life, either good or bad, is a way to have the reader connect and relate to how the writer truly feels. It’s much easier to read a passage that makes you visualize and feel what the author is talking about. I believe that being vulnerable as a writer helps the reader understand the true feelings the writer is going through, making it easier to connect and stay interested in the authors story.

Ensuring your reader can understand your perspective by using clear words and ideas is very important. You don't want to argue two opposing points or tell your story out of chronological order in a manner that will confuse your reader. Clearly stating when, what, and where you are in a story or essay is an excellent thing to keep in mind while writing.

I believe an important aspect of good writing is knowing who your audience is and writing to them. Visualizing who you are writing for can help with word choice and how you want your essay to sound, whether it be logical or laid back. Knowing your audience will help you organize your ideas, help you choose what material you would like to include, and how best to support whatever argument you have created.

In order to create a persuasive or interesting paper you have to be able to visualize your main goal. Without knowing what you wish to achieve in your writing your reader isn't going to be able figure it out either. By stating to yourself the main goals you want to achieve by the end of your piece then it when be much more enjoyable and understable experience for your reader.

You can have as much information, sources, and words as possible. However, all of that is useless if your writing is not clear, coherent, and has meaning. Your reader has to understand your argument or statement. If the writing is not coherent and well put together then the read is going to be unenjoyable and bland. Finally, if your writing has no substance or meaning then the essay is basically pointless gibberish on a page.

To me, all writing needs to be about the audience. When reading something we all want to be engaged in what we are reading. We want what we give our readers to be meaningful and powerful. When I write something I want the reader to feel it in their soul. I want them to be on the edge of their seat and in their toes waiting for more. When reading I always look for the purpose. One of the main goals of the writer should be is to give the reader purpose. It gives them something to hold on to, and it gives them hope.
