Each of the characters has a different outfit to emphasise their personalities:

Joy wears a light dress to help her move freely

Sadness wears a jumper which she occasionally hides in during the film

Anger wears a suit and tie to represent their stern and strict attitude

Disgust also wears a dress but hers has a flower motif on it, could be because in the film she cares much more about appearance than the rest of the emotions so her outfit has more subtle details

Fears outfit is all over the place, a vest tie with baggy trousers and large shoes. The randomness of his design could represent how fear can manifest at any moment.

Rileys design also changes throughout the movie

At the start of the film, she is seen wearing yellow a lot of the time, this probably was to represent how joy was the main emotion in control.

During the argument scene where Riley and her family are eating, she is wearing a red and green jagged striped shirt, this shows her mixed emotions.

When Riley gets depressed she starts to wear a full black hoodie, showing her disdain for her current predicament.

At the end of the movie she wears a blue outfit, which could show that Joy has finally accepted Sadness. This is further emphasised by the fact that the shirt she is wearing is the same one their hockey team wears

Parent and child relationships

The film highlights a lot of unspoken issues between parents and children

Adjusting to a new life

The film highlights the struggle of moving as a child, adjusting to a new school and making new friends. This can also link to the relationship between children and parents, as there can be a lack of communication or consideration in these situations. Moving is usually a lot harder for children than parents, as they have to leave their friends and life behind.

The need to supress certain emotions

The film shows the importance of how supressing certain emotions especially ones like sadness aren’t healthy, as its important to experience every emotion as it can have positive benefits when dealing with moving or appreciating old memories, which are themes shown throughout the film.
