         <description><![CDATA[<div>Here is a first draft design of my centipede inspired back brace, this shows each support can act as a pivot on each section of the spine including the cervical, thoracic, lumbar, sacrum, and coccyx regions.<br><br>Our aim is to create product that treats scoliosis but also allows for more movement than the current solution.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Our idea would be to create brace around the section of the spine vulnerable to abnormal curvature to hold the spine in place.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>The brace would be designed in sections similar to the spine with a rubber or silicone material in between each section that give more flexibility to move.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>The shape of the brace could be curved and rounded to fit around the spine.&nbsp;<br><br></div><div>Silicon and metal are possible suitable materials for our product.<br><br>The brace would be an invasive solution to solve scoliosis.<br><br></div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Our main tool in order to present our synthetic anatomy idea is to 3D print our solution to scoliosis. Throughout the module we learnt how to use all the 3D printers available to us, this includes the FLSUN, WASP, ENDER. These printers print at a printing temperature of 200°C and a build plate temperature of 60°C. Except the wasp which prints at a printing temperature of 215°C and the same build plate temperature as the rest.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div><sub>• Scoliosis was first documented by the ancient Greeks and some evidence of the unnatural Spinal curvature can also be seen in animals. <br>• There are three different etiology of scoliosis i.e there are three different ways scoliosis is caused in humans. <br>• Idiopathic: Occurs during adolescence and the cause is unknown. <br>• Congenital: Babies born with curvature in their spine <br>• Neuromuscular:&nbsp; Disorders of the nerves or muscular system.<br>• Scoliosis is a medical condition characterised by abnormal lateral curvature of the spine, as measured by an X-ray with a Cobb angle greater than 10 degrees. It is most commonly diagnosed during adolescence and affects about 2-3% of the population. A number of factors, including genetic predisposition, neuromuscular disorders, and developmental abnormalities, can contribute to the condition.</sub><br><br></div><div><br><br></div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>The scanner works by reflecting light of an object and timing how long it takes to come back to the source, this then inputs the shape of the object with the accurate depth of the object onto a software that connects to the scanner. This can then be converted to a STL file and 3D printed. Any additional edits of the scan can be made on ITK snap to fill in any missed areas that were not scanned properly or that do not need to be scanned for time sake.<br><br>• Advantages: we can directly trace and replicate real life objects so we can add designs using the scan as a base on CAD softwares.<br><br>• Disadvantages: Long process, high margin for error, cannot scan objects with dark coloured hair.</div>]]></description>

We omitted the cervical part of the spine as the pieces would be too small and fragile to connect to the rest of the spine. This print will be used in the introductory part of our table display with a NFC chip for the user to read from their own phone.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>I proposed the idea of NFC chips to my group, this idea involves using NFC or near field communication chips by programming information into them. This is a type of wireless technology that allows for the transfer of data between two devices when they are brought into close proximity of each other. NFC works by using electromagnetic induction to establish a wireless communication link between the two devices. This technology is used in everyday life for things like contactless payments, public transportation systems, and sharing files between devices.  I programmed 9 different chips with the pdf slides we created from canva and videos onto the chips. Once the information is written onto the chip, it can be read by other NFC-enabled devices simply by bringing them into close proximity with the chip.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

These tools served two purposes which are to remove any supports and excess adhesion from our final 3D print. Another purpose for these tools is quality control and assurance as a file is used to ensure that all edges are smooth to the touch.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This idea was rejected because in order to 3D print a QR code we had to trace the code onto a CAD software to make a STL file. However, due to the complexity of the QR code there was no room for error as any slight difference in 3D printing would make the code unreadable, with this in mind the 3D printer used may not print it accurately with the same precision as it involves melting the acrylic and placing it onto the bed which may lead to slight errors in the code.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Over the course of 3D printing some damages did occur such as parts of the spine where pieces cracked off while removing supports due to their fragility. As well as parts of the ribs breaking off our ribcage. To solve this problem we either used hot glue gun to put the pieces back into their original places or we used cyanoacrylate to provide the same purpose. As can be seen in our model above where a leg was broken during the removal of supports, this will need to be placed back to its original place with glue.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is our full life sized spine with all 17 pieces, 5 from the lumbar region and 12 from the thoracic region. This was added onto its own stand of painted red paper to mimic the internal tissue of a human torso as well as being a vibrant colour so it stands out to the audience. Some problems that arose after all 17 pieces were printed and connected were:<br><br>• When trying to push each hinge of the spine pieces into the other some pieces snapped, to solve this we used hot glue to put the pieces back together.<br><br>• T12 (Thoracic 12) was printed with a different colour filament to the rest of the pieces, to solve this we had to use paint to make it white which is the same colour as the rest of the pieces.<br><br>These were printed with a combination of both the FLSUN and WASP printers using PLA filament and painted using acrylic paint.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is how the final display looked after months of careful planning, the table display tells a story where all the models are placed in an order for the audience to view one at a time. The ordering has been confirmed with each NFC chip being numbered 1-8 with an additional NFC chip containing a video showing how scoliosis surgery is performed. However the order of viewing does not have to be followed as we included a contents page at the front so the audience is free to view any sections at their own accord. With assistance from the discipline of kaizen I wanted the table display to be minimalistic and organised so it is clearer for the audience to understand thus keeping them more engaged. </div>]]></description>

The viewers can then use their phones and tap each chip where the information will instantly display on their phone through NFC technology. This idea was chosen as it was the most convenient and also provided the element of surprise as to the naked eye there is not a lot of information there as we don't want to steal the spotlight from any of the models so a simple NFC chip still allows us to provide information in a more discrete and minimalistic way.</div>]]></description>

This was specifically done in the biomimicry section of the table display. Another way bathos was implemented is keeping every section simple and short and only leaving the model on display with little to no writing to provide an element of anti-climax leaving the audience to want to delve in more detail making them more inclined to tap the NFC chips.</div>]]></description>

Also, the table display included visual aids that make it easier for the audience to understand complex concepts and draw their own conclusions. We also broke down any medical jargon into Layman's terms using bullet points or numbered lists to organise information. The overall flow of the table display was presented in a logical and coherent manner to create a clear hierarchy of information.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>Mood lighting was used solely on the final section and model only. This was done in order to highlight and accentuate the final print which is hung up in a box that mimics a theatre show stage so the audience is drawn to it. This was done because I wanted to put extra attention into the final design as it shows the idea that was thought of after months of research. The final display was accompanied by a NFC chip with information on it. The moon light was placed inside the box whereas the sunset lamp was placed outside the box facing the model so we can get lighting from both angles. The light in conjunction with hanging the model gave the idea of a greater importance to that specific section of the table display.</div>]]></description>

These printers may require supports on certain prints as well as adhesion, supports are required if a print is overhanging or includes complex geometries where the printer is unable to print, these help to prevent the model from collapsing or distorting during the printing process.          <description><![CDATA[<div>These are the prints to be used for our biomimicry section of our display. The supports here need to be cut for the cow and painted to add more detail. For the centipede as it was not a complex print there was only adhesion to remove which is simply done with pliers and cutters. The cow will need to be able to stand so extra care was taken when removing the supports and adhesion. These will be placed in conjunction with a NFC chip containing information on what biomimicry is and how it is applied to our final solution.</div>]]></description>

We decided to implement this idea on our device (rod) to solve scoliosis. We use this as an idea for a solution to scoliosis as our device requires all these attributes from the bio inspired tennis rackets.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is our final print of the cow and centipede on a section on artificial grass to invoke connotations of nature and the natural world. These are here purely as a representation of the organisms we used to inspire our models to solve scoliosis this information is placed on a NFC chip. These were printed using the FLSUN printer using PLA filament in white for the centipede and in grey for the cow. No problems arose from either the printing or removal of the supports and adhesion for both of these prints. The centipede could have been printed larger but decided to leave it as a smaller size in the final print so it is somewhat relative to the cow.</div>]]></description>

A single rod consists of 3 cylindrical tubes with a thick layer or hot glue in between to resemble cartilage and joints.          <description><![CDATA[<div>This is the initial print for our ortho inspired brace. It uses elastics in braces to help move the teeth into the desired position and to correct the alignment of the bite, however in the context of the spine the elastics are used to straighten scoliosis back to a desirable angle for everyday life. The elastics apply gentle and continuous force to the spine, which helps to shift it into the desired position over time.&nbsp;This will be placed on to the table display in conjunction with a NFC chip providing information on how the ortho-inspired brace works.</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>This is the finished print for the flexible rod solution the initial print was displayed in conjunction with another component which is used to connect each rod to the other. Also there is a NFC chip on the podium to allow the user to see how the device looks when it is connected to the spine. These components were printed using the WASP printed in white, beige and grey PLA filament. No errors happened during the&nbsp; print, however there was an issue using the hot glue and moulding it neatly onto the rest of the print.&nbsp;</div>]]></description>

         <description><![CDATA[<div>After completing the print of the torso with scoliosis we painted it using acrylic paint in colours that are commonly associated to the human body. There is also a NFC chip attached to the podium we made to give information on the medical condition we chose for our project. Small errors occurred whilst removing supports from these prints due to it being so small and fragile. The WASP was used to print these models using PLA filament.</div>]]></description>

A mini version of the model is used in conjunction with rods and a screw in order to show what device we will be using to attach this directly to the spine. I used PLA as the material to print this in white filament as it is a concept design. This was printed using the FLSUN 3D printer. No problems arose from printing this design and no problems occurred during the removal on the supports and adhesion.</div>]]></description>

Some improvements that could have been made are:<br><br>• to improve the ethos of the display a call to action could be added to the end providing information on how individuals can seek help or information on scoliosis.<br><br>• to improve the pathos of the display the member of the team suffering from scoliosis could provide a short account on how it affects their everyday life as these stories can humanise the condition and help viewers connect to those affected by scoliosis emotionally.</div>]]></description>

The 3D printer allowed for the printing of the models required for the table display and the CAD software allowed a creative edge for designing models that I would not have been able to achieve prior to the lessons. Any mistakes and mishaps were fixed by this stage to ensure it is ready for the table display.&nbsp;The final prints were then placed on their individual podium in order to display it neatly to the audience. We made each podium out of recycled cardboard boxes and covered or painted them if necessary.</div>]]></description>
