The author is trying to make us see that we don't need to care about others, since they could not see the would the way Jonas does, because of sameness. Since they see the world more mundanely, Jonas thinks that he should let them experience pain. In other words, when the giver and Jonas are discussing Jonas asks him why the two of them have to care for other people. The author is trying to make us see that in the real world even though we might have some thoughts of negativity or indecisiveness we must always know that we must always choose to care for the ones we love and show gratitude to them. This quote moves the story forward by showing us that others might have these experiences as well and suffer pain in the future.

In other words, Jonas feels like no one in his community doesn’t matter and everyone is fake, but then he understands that they were taught that way and he needs to help them understand these complex feelings. The author is trying to make us see that the world is complicated and that people think it’s normal not to feel love, or see color or have memories of pain or true happiness and how Jonas is losing hope in his community. This quote moves the story forward by showing us how Jonas is going to find Elsewhere but the Giver has to stay behind to help the community cope with the memories that would come from Jonas and they would not know how to handle them.

If the meaning of life was to only survive we wouldn’t have the capacity to care. In other words, the giver and Jonas are the only ones in that society with the capability to make a change. The author is trying to make us see that the characters are making a very tough decision and they have a choice to make that could change the lives of everyone they know. In other words, Jonas said, ‘Giver we don’t need to care and worry about everyone else.” The author is trying to make us understand the gravity of the situation. And Lois Lowry is trying to make us see that this situation is a more serious scene and that it shows how kind the giver is. This quote moves the story forward by showing us that Jonas will most likely escape on his own.
