Author and Illustrator: Eric Carle

Publisher: Puffin Books

Year of Publication: 2002

Summary and Annotation:

Slowly, slowly, slowly, the sloth moved along the branch of the tree. While the sloth took its time, different animals came and went. Because of how the sloth moved, he was asked why he was slow, quiet, and boring, but did not reply. Finally, when he was asked why he was lazy, he explained that he was not, rather, it was just the way he moved.

The story shows how some animals (and people) choose to move slowly compared to others. Though they may be judged from how they moved, it does not mean that they arelazy. It is just how they are, different from anybody else.

Then you have to make more muffins, and here is where the story gets more exciting. Each event causes another, and another, from asking for a sweater to asking for jam. And the jam will make him ask for a muffin, which implies that the cycle will start all over again.

There is an unpredictable turn of events at each page, one more interesting and funny than the previous one. The children who read this can be asked to predict what might happen, and be surprised at what actually happened.

The fish friends had different ways of seeing the race - Spike was a sore loser who gave up without finishing the race, Puffer boasted every time he could. They eventually decided to stop playing, until Dyna had a brilliant idea: They will play obstacle relay, and they have to work together to win. During the race, they should not knock anything down. Rainbow Fish zoomed around, while Rusty took his time. Of course, Rainbow Fish knocked a pile of shells, making Rusty the winner.

In this book, fishes of all shapes and sizes make up the group. Each fish had its own unique way of swimming, which had an effect on the race. The bottomline of the story: In any game, it is important to be a good sport since there will always be a winner and loser.
