I wonder about this idea of voice, while I am moved by what Kayla shared I am also thinking about something I hear people say a lot about "giving someone a voice" or that "my role as a teacher is to give my students a voice" How do you think Kayla would respond to this? To me, she isn't suggesting someone gave her a voice but that through typing we become more willing to "hear" her and accept her as part of our society.

"communication is the foundation for all things in life. If i did not have a voice, I would be nothing more than a shell of a person being led around" --> does this communication have to be in words? are there other forms of communication that give voice?

In reading this piece Kayla's parents seem to have been extremely supportive or her since the doctor forced them to make the appointment and they finally had a way to communicate with their daughter, I feel as though they almost doubted it would make a difference for her. I wonder why her mother took so long to make the appointment in the first place? I wonder if they had tried other communication approaches before meeting with the lady who taught her to type.

It seems as though once Kayla was exposed to typing as a form of communication, she was able to identify and take on challenges that really pushed her to grow. She always could think, so the challenge of not being heard by others must have been very frustrating.
