‘It started out big and energetic, then grew more deep and melodic after the pandemic, often with a warm, rolling bassline and a catchy vocal hook on labels like Defected, Spinnin’ Deep, and Armada Music. “I want my songs to be something that people can connect with on a deeper level,” he explains. “I want the audience to be listening to my music long after the show is over.’ (DJ Mag, 2023). In his interview with the DJ Mag magazine, Vintage Culture says about the type of songs that he creates, mostly in the genres of melodic house, deep house or melodic techno. Vintage Culture has inspired me a lot with his electronic compositions. I feel his house records have heavy low end elements. For instance, most of his records have groovy basslines, including other sounds like plucky bass arps and lead synths. One thing I love about his music is he keeps the melodies of his songs simple, which helps him connect more with his audience. He also focuses on having chord progressions in between his songs, mainly in the breakdown part of the track.

Since the late 2000s, I have always found Guetta’s records to be inspirational and has motivated me a lot. His records always have catchy grooves and melodies. Even the audio quality of all the type of synth sounds he uses have made his records more captivating to the audience. The way he has experimented with different genres. For instance, he was the first one to collaborate with a hip hop artist Akon on a dance record called Sexy Chick, which became a massive hit in 2009. ‘In 2011, he launched his Jack Back project to spotlight the more progressive sounds that fuelled his come-up.’ (DJ Mag, 2023). The above quote speaks about his side project called Jack Back where he only focuses on creating House Music with underground house artists and music producers. A lot of his Jack Back records are not mainstream, but the musicality present in these records are as good as his mainstream songs. I feel all of his compositions have an optimistic vibe to it, it puts you in a cheerful mood.

‘Rising from the ashes of Joy Division in 1980, New Order pushed electronic music forward, combining post-punk sounds with dance music to emerge as one of the most interesting groups of the new wave, synth-pop era.’ (Ryan, 2018). Vintage Culture has spoken about New Order having an influence on him, when he started his musical journey. He has used some of the musical elements in his songs which are almost alike to New Order's. To give an example, in the song 'Sinners & Fools', Vintage Culture has used a clap sound(0:22) which has similar characteristics with the clap sound used by New Order in the song True Faith(0:01).

Vintage Culture - Sinners & Fools

https://open.spotify.com/track/7uqbZxgcjz2Hy3z4yBLpuv?si=177fd958bfad41a8

New Order - True Faith

https://open.spotify.com/track/4fpxnJGDWFxjGvLJOqPPt8?si=786d4b8467c048d0

'The foundation for Kraftwerk’s music was the sounds of everyday life, a concept first fully realized on the 22-minute title track of the Autobahn album (1974). Repetitious, monotonous, lulling, and entrancing, “Autobahn” became an unlikely hit in Europe and the United States.' (Kot, 2024). Kraftwerk were one of the first musical groups who started experimenting with synthesized sounds. As Vintage Culture says in his documentary, Kraftwerk has inspired him a lot with the type of synth sounds he creates. For instance, in the song ‘Still Don’t Know What I Want’, by Vintage Culture, the arpeggiator that starts at 2:10 is very much similar to the bass arp used by Kraftwerk in the song Radioactivity which starts at 0:10. In another song in the same album called Love or Hate, starting at 0:33 the arp with a delay effect on it, is similar to the arp synth used by Kraftwerk in a song called ‘It’s more fun to Compute’(1:03).

Vintage Culture - Still Don’t Know What I Want

https://open.spotify.com/track/5BGygi0WJPqdS9Cj3DM35m?si=0e24e53f537f4771

Kraftwerk - Radioactivity

https://open.spotify.com/track/3kwql90R2gmkK12R8uGHCs?si=86eddfe117fc4260

Vintage Culture - Love or Hate

https://open.spotify.com/track/4pYfnQ7puCOWWoMWvt6paU?si=2ad4b27b4f644e92

Kraftwerk - It’s More Fun To Compute

https://open.spotify.com/track/4ytERlujqfGWtrpdupyCSG?si=5e334a4717494ffc

(McIver, 2018). Vintage Culture has spoken about how producers like David Guetta, Avicii and ARTBAT’s style of electronic music has inspired him to add similar elements to his tracks. For Instance in his new album ‘The Promised Land’, the song ‘Hero’ has a guitar riff combined with a pluck sound which starts at 2:30. Those sounds are very much identical to Avicii’s iconic pluck sound.

I have been listening to house music for around 10 years now. I listen to the following genres of house - deep house, tech, future house, melodic house, melodic techno, afro house and many more. Before that I used to listen to only mainstream Pop, Hip Hop, Rock and Synth Pop. Artists such as Linkin Park, Black Eyed Peas, Rihanna, Akcent, Taio Cruz, Sean Kingston and many other mainstream artists. Most of these songs were played by my siblings in the car or at home. That's how I started discovering these genres. It's now that I have discovered more sub genres, mostly in the genre of Electronic music and have came across so many talented music producer's work.

"I might make dance music but that doesn't mean I'm not influenced by bands like Kings of Leon and Coldplay" Guetta has stated. (Guetta “Influenced by Rock Music,” 2010). While speaking to Capital FM, David Guetta has said about how bands like Coldplay have an influence on his music. For instance, in the song 'Lovers on the Sun', he introduces an acoustic guitar riff(0:46) to add more presence in the build up to the drop. Similarly, in the song 'Fix you', Coldplay have an acoustic guitar riff, which starts later in the song(1:46). This is not exactly the same way Guetta used it, but he might be inspired by the idea to introduce more instruments at a later stage in the song by listening to this song of Coldplay.

David Guetta - Lovers on the Sun

https://open.spotify.com/track/49UCy7ULIvWK6jIP6Rhqtk?si=6b1e52df7ccf4372

Coldplay - Fix You

https://open.spotify.com/track/7LVHVU3tWfcxj5aiPFEW4Q?si=aa514a24efba40db

In 2018, David Guetta was interviewed by Genelec. In that interview, he has mentioned about Frankie Knuckle’s influence on him. Guetta always speaks about how initially he got to know about house music and its relevance when he first heard Chicago House in the late 80s. Frankie Knuckles style of house music had a positive impact on David Guetta’s music. For example, the bassline(0:16) in the song Tears by Frankie Knuckles sounds alike to the bassline used by David Guetta in the song Give me something(0:01). Maybe musically, the two audio sounds are not same, but the sonic character of the two bassline sounds have similar qualities.

Frankie Knuckles - Tears

https://open.spotify.com/track/6HJA3UETnQLtmMJFGfafRm?si=18d18b9f27f94040

David Guetta - Give Me Something

https://open.spotify.com/track/4ESy68FFFxPyKssmU3a33J?si=b44852977c5243af
