Now he had a lab on his own, and permission to do his research. He kept working day and night. He found the calculus of intelligence fascinating.
Dr Strauss thought Charlie was working too hard, and Dr Nemur said he was trying to do a lifetime of research in just a couple of weeks. He wanted to know if the same regression in Algernon would happen to him, and when.
Charlie then wrote a letter to Dt Strauss about his report “ The Algernon- Gordon Effect: Study of Structure and Function of increased Intelligence”.

He studied Algernon, he had regressed mentally, motor activity was impaired, and loss of coordination. There were strong indications of progressive amnesia.
As long as Charlie was able to write and record his thoughts, it was one of his few pleasures, however his mental deteriorations would be rapid.
His deterioration was progressing, he had become absent-minded, and Algernon had died two days ago, his brain weight had decreased, and broadening of brain fissures.
He put Algernon’s body in a cheese box and buried him in the backyard. He cried.

Charlie wanted to be by himself now. He felt irritable, and felt the darkness closing in. He started forgetting about books he had read, he was desperate to at least retain some of the things he’d learnt. He started forgetting where he lived. He’s mind was now deteriorating rapidly, and started with some amnesia.
He gave up using the typewriter, he had a terrible coordination now, and he stopped understanding every language he had learnt.
