When I graduated from high school, I was a terrible student. I wouldn't go to classes and I had a disgusting attitude about learning and bettering myself. It wasn't until I hit a "bottom", that I wanted to change myself. I got myself through the next several years of my undergrad, graduated cum laude, and then went on to continue my education with Mankato State University. 
Currently, I am in the English Literature program, with plans to graduate at the end of spring semester. There are so many community and social constructs that prevent so many students, parents, people from achieving their goals because of barriers that are placed by society. I acknowledge that I have grown up privileged. I am a white, middle class woman with some college debt. I teach in a very diverse school. 89% of my students are Black, Hispanic, Asian (and its variations), Somali, and so on. I have to, as an educator, find a balance between my experiences and theirs. Which, in my opinion, is better than being "just a good teacher". Understanding that our students have lives that are larger than life and more complex; we have to as educators embrace that and explore that in our teaching. In the exploration of good teaching, we need to evaluate the intellectual, emotional and spiritual. Understanding the way we think about teaching, how our students feel when we teach, and the diverse ways we answer connectedness, can only create more interesting and aware places of learning. 

With that, Palmer notes that the one thing that is in educators control is their identity, which I truly connected to. Knowing that my BIPOC students have different life experiences than me is something I need to also have our students connect with in the texts we read. Because like Showalter mentions, teaching, while communicative in nature, is really a privatized event behind closed doors. I teach at a K-8 school and my 7th & 8th grade team had tense difficulties with our curriculum coordinator. She never fully understood that it was just ME. Teaching 7th & 8th grade ELA. Not a teach of 4th grade teachers. Additionally, I was making content on my own. The lower grades had a pre-bought curriculum. That isolation piece is certainly a true anxiety in predominately secondary and higher education. For myself, because I don't have someone to bounce ideas off of, I question every assignment I create.
